How many Star Destroyers are required to break through a planetary shield?

At Hoth, there was the Death Squadron, which contained six Star Destroyers. Could they not obliterate the shield? Or did Vader want to capture the Rebel base and chose not to bombard?

In the literature, there are very few worlds with planetary shields. Why is that? If they are truly useful and powerful enough to hold off large numbers of ships then why don't most planets have them? Coruscant had the double shields, Ukio and Woostri had shields in the Heir to the Empire trilogy and I think it was Bothawui with them in Spectre of the Past/Vision of the Future.

Thanx

Doesn't someone in ESB mention that the shields can withstand any bombardment?

I'd say that if they won't give Vader enough ships to crack planetary shields, then their pretty much never going to get cracked.

You might look in the fan made source books here on the forums and see if maybe the equipment book by Gry Sarth has their stats. He seems to have everything else in there that I look for.

It may well be impossible to crack them with capship weapons, since they'd probably be death star scale.

Yes, General Veers. Of course Vader didn't have a Death Star with him. And the shield protecting the Rebel base on Hoth wasn't a planetary shield so it didn't have that massive of a power requirement. Perhaps the Rebel shield may have been even stronger than planetary shield, so that's why the Empire had to land slow-moving ground assault vehicles to get through weak points where the shield met the ground.

Though you think the shield generator itself would have shields on it..

Well sure, but then the Imperials would just have attacked the shield generator's shield's shield generator first. Laughing

The Emperor's overconfidence was his weakness.

Since they ignore all other shields, (well except plot shields.. yuk yuk..) then i would say yes.

I have to completely disagree.
If that was the case then the empire would have had absolutely no problem firing on Hoth from orbit with all the Ion cannons their fleet had, not to mention there would have been no need for the empire to have even wasted the resources to design and build the torpedo sphere who's sole reason for existance is to take down planetary shields with specially designed proton torpedoes.
The Thrawn trilogy would have been rendered rather inane with there not being any need for the subterfuge by Thrawn at the battle of Ukio and the siege of Coruscant would have been rendered useless.
IF ion cannons can penetrate the planetary shields then the whole reason for keeping planetary shields becomes moot as they are seriously expensive to buy and maintain to begin with.

So planetary shields are the only ones configured to protect against ion cannons?

I agree with Gamer and would thus say "Yes, planetary shields are the only shields configured to protect against ion cannons".

Think of it...if they didn't protect, the Empire simply targets the shield generator from orbit, fires ions at it, the ions go through the shields, fry the shield generator and the planetary shields drop. Rolling Eyes

Hardly effective at protecting a planet for any length of time.

Imagine the Battle of Hoth.
Veers: "Comscan has detected a energy field protecting a section on the sixth planet. It's strong enough to deflect any bombardment."

Vader: "No, General, fire ions cannons at the generator, drop their shields, and turn the planet into a slush ball."

Veers: "Uh..yes, Lord Vader."

Minutes later: Veers: "The rebellion has been wiped out, Lord Vader. Our star destroyers are mopping up the few survivors that managed to escape before the planet broke apart."

So suffice to say, planetary shields also protect against ion weaponry.

Someone in WEG made a mistake long time ago or someone did not coordinate EU at that moment. In the movie we know that Ion shots do not ignore planetary shields as from the discussion above. From the X-Wing/TIE Fighter games we know that Ion shots do not ignore ship shields. There is no information that shields are different except for size of the generator. Wookiepedia says even: "They also helped to drop shields prior to destroying enemy vessels." In other way ship shields do protect against shields. Personally I play that ion shots do not ignore shields, it would be too powerful weapon. Think of fleet that could surprise another and disable it completely. Ion cannons, even if shields do protect against them, are still a powerful weapon.
