Ok, we know when a facilties walls are magnetically sealed that blasters bounce off. BUT if something is highly magnetized, can it have other effects on blaster bolts such as making them 'skew' one way or another?

EG. Large magnetic picker up unit (like a crane pick up unit in a junk yard), making blaster shots at it go off in a different direction?

Sure, if you want to make it happen in your game, I think there's enough techno-babbble you can stuff into it to make it stick.

I vaguely recall reading many years ago some gobbledygook about SW blasters not being lasers as canon claims, but rather that they use a preliminary laser pulse to heat/excite/ionize the air. That tunnel of ionized air then becomes the conduit for the plasma released a split second later, which forms the actual blast.

I think the idea was inspired by then-recent discoveries about how lightning operates, and meant to explain why "lasers" would travel slowly enough to watch. Maybe even explain why they would go pew! pew! when lasers are so quiet.

Anyway, if you adopt this model, the blaster beam carries a high electrical charge and would indeed bend in strong magnetic fields. How much they would bend is open to debate. I think it would split two directions: negative and positive ions bending in separate streams. Ask a physics student which directions; I don't remember my handedness laws any more.

In the real world, very strong magnetic fields can affect objects. As can strong electrical or gravitational fields-all of which are common things in Star Wars.

I suspect that Shields do something along thse lines, especially particle shields. Probably tractor beams, too.

Even that 4G gravity field from your other thread would afect the trajectory of blaster bolts (the bolts would "fall" four times as aast, or 19.6 meters in the first second, rather than the usual 4.9 meters).

If those imperials are really clever, they could wrap a copper coil (or Star Wars high tech equvivalnt) around a section of thier base/plant, run eletrcitiy through it and make a monsterously huge and powerful electromagnet.

And if you make a magnetic powerful enough it will affect non ferrous substances. That is what MRI's do.

There is enough fluff to support that sort of thing yes. After a little research it seems that the blaster bolt is not encased in a magnetic feild (which accounts for the lack of reaction to ferrous metals but a charged package of plasma (in most cases) and charged objects to interact with magnetic fields.

So wht would be a good ruling to go by.
Slight magnetic field, +4 to hit penalty
Moderate, +8 penalty
Strong, +12
Powerful, +16
Humongus, +20..

Or you could just treat it as a shield, and assign a die code. The trash compactor scene seems to suggest that the blaster shot hit the door, but got deflected as if off a shield...all around the room.

I agree more with this line of thinking, and typically use something similar to this in my games.

There is substantial evidence that blasters do not shoot light at people, but little wads of plasma. Plasma is charged.

Interesting bringing of this back up..
I was thinking of using a series of massive magnets in walls as a enemies stop gap to funnel the party to kill zones..

How does it funnel a party? I can see it causing Blater bolts to skew but why would they go towards it?

Think of how many pc's walk arouind with heavy armor, or lots of weaponry... OR cybernetics.
All that can be affected and would funnel someone.

Well that assumes the metals in Star Wars are ferrous based, they may not be.
