Has any one done an unkown regions exploration campain? Do you have any meterial left from it you'd like to share?

Here are just some ideas i had for things players in my past exploration that the encountered in the new republic era:

-- A star system where the clone wars never ended.

-- Mandalorian Neo-Crusaders who've be hiding for centuries.

-- A world populated by Massasi and Kissai.

-- A world covered entirely in city scape like coruscant and Eridu... but in ruins, the native poupulation having long died out.

-- The Planet Earth (Yes real life Earth)...

-- A warrior race even the Toffs and Vaagari dread....

-- Haunted ghost ships.....

Can you folks share any things/ideas you've had for this type of campain?

Falcon79, a few comments on your ideas. They seem like a good start.

Quote:
-- A star system where the clone wars never ended.

You need to solve the rapid aging of clones mentioned in several of the EU sources.
(i) Maybe these are a special age retarding group of clones (old, gray-haired clones that are older than some of the PCs and that have been fighting for 25+ years sounds interesting).
(ii) Or there is a clone headquarters with cloning facilities (choose your style of cloning Spaarti speed-grow crazy clones or Kaminoan slow growth quality clones). Could be that the Clone Masters need new templates i.e. some of the PCs since the old templates are aging and the clones turned out are becoming old/feeble/flawed.

Quote:
-- Mandalorian Neo-Crusaders who've be hiding for centuries.

Could be interesting if you put them in cryostasis and the Mandalorians thaw out when the PCs arrive or the PCs nicely or ignorantly choose to thaw them out.

Quote:
-- A world populated by Massasi and Kissai.

I'm seeing a savage, hostile jungle world.

Quote:
-- A world covered entirely in city scape like coruscant and Eridu... but in ruins, the native poupulation having long died out.

But what killed them...and will it kill the PCs as well? Idea

Quote:
-- The Planet Earth (Yes real life Earth)...

I'm with long time ago and far, far away...but an earth in the age of the dinosaurs could be interesting. Maybe the PCs have a chance to deflect or cause the asteroid strike that wipes out the dinosaurs and makes way for man. Twisted Evil

Quote:
-- A warrior race even the Toffs and Vaagari dread....

Don't recall the Toffs or Vaagari, so no comment there. But scary warrior races can be good. Maybe a race that is planet bound and wants the PCs to help them get hyperdrive technology. What the warriors don't tell the PCs is that the race's goal is to conquer all the inferior races in the galaxy, which is everyone. Bwaahaahaa. Twisted Evil

Quote:
-- Haunted ghost ships.....

I like this idea. Haunted ships are always good for Unknown space. I recall we ran into an ancient Sith ship that had Sith war droids and such guarding it and a hostile Sith wraith.

After the fall of the Rebel Base on Almar Station, our campaign had a short rag-tag, fugitive fleet mini-campaign that involved some exploration in the Unknown Regions. A few of our scenario ideas follow.

(1) The PCs encounter an old prospector, and his ancient Starcab, needs help. In return he gives the PCs a copy of his jump coordinate maps of a portion of the Unknown Region. This can provide a hook for various other planets and encounters.

(2) If the players are interested in trading or prospecting, they detect rich calderite deposits (or whatever rare metal/mineral the GM chooses) on an arctic planet. However there they also find a motley assortment of miners (Cuzik, Skass, and the “dog” Cooter) in possession. These miners have already sold all the ore they have gathered, but further away is another miner, “old man Epel might have the ore they need, as he always holds some back.” The trip out to Epel’s holding, is dangerous both from the extreme weather and from snow beast attacks. (I can’t recall why we didn’t just fly there, but I leave that to the GM.) Old Epel has a very good stash of ore, but his price is that they take his granddaughter “to freedom and happiness off-planet” when they go.

(3) A planet, just inside the edge of a large gas cloud, that is inhabited by ShadowSpiders, a scary arachnoid species. They are ruled/controlled/led by a telepathic Queen Spider. She can use her telepathy to influence non-Spiders. Force users may be immune or may just have a higher resistance. (I was a player not the GM.) The planet has a graveyard of old ships left by previous victims of the ShadowSpiders. They are stranded there because their organic HiveShip was disabled and stranded by the Jedi Soreth who removed the HiveShip’s master control key (the Eye of Soreth). As it turned out, the Jedi character in the party owned the Eye (obtained long previous, using the Eye the Jedi learned the Instinctive Astrogation skill.) The Spider Queen wants the Eye back so that the Spiders can leave the planet. Our characters refused to return to key, battled the ShadowSpiders to free their captured crew mate. During the battle the PCs somewhat reluctantly, killed the Queen, dooming the Hive to eventual death. Their decision to battle the Spiders may have been influenced by the web-encased husks of the hundreds (or thousands) of previous victims.

(4) Here There Be Gremlins – the players respond to the independent Baris colony’s distress call. The colony is experiencing a series of mysterious failures of technology (power sources that mysteriously are drained of charge, electronics that short out or fail, etc.) The PCs must solve the mystery of the tech failures before they can spread and disable the player’s ship (and beyond). The failures are caused by power-draining alien nanotechnology uncovered in a nearby ancient ruin. To stop the tech failures the heroes must detect and shut off the UHF binary overchannel that controls the alien nanites. This is mostly a non-combat scenario. Interacting with the colonist leaders and a mechanical/technical problem to discover and solve.

(5) On one planet we found a hideout of a Dark Side villain that contained a clone of the Dark Sider. The clone possessed some, but not much, of the Dark Sider’s knowledge. Enough so that he could act as a teacher for the young Jedi character. The clone was to serve as a host for the Dark Sider, who intended to return to his hideout and use Transfer Life to take over the clone. But the PCs broke the clone out of his growth container early and freed him. The Clone aided the characters for a time and then eventually gave his life fighting his “brother-father” in an attempt to save the clone’s unborn son. (Since the original Dark Sider was the biological father of the Young Jedi, the familial relationships got a bit confusing.)

(6) Rough space e.g. ion storms, difficult to navigate gas clouds, unexpected asteroids and micro meteor fields, black holes, pulsars, etc. provide a different sort of challenge than combat and points out why it is safer traveling through known space.

Being a huge 40K fluff fan I have the following up my sleeve..

-A floating world-ship where the last remnants of a dying race is living out their last centuries (or millennia). They are a force sensitive race and their society is strictly regulated along different paths to keep the populace to fall to the dark side..however this has not always worked out for them resulting in a civil war.

-An isolated cluster of many stars containing a xenophobic 'empire' of warlike humans. They follow a near mythical Emperor, which is a dying and force user of incredible strength in the force who sits immobile on his throne/life support.

-A system inhabited by technology inclined squat near-humans. They have a society based on extensive family clans, and mostly live in subterran strongholds. Because of their affinity for technology and their stubborn refusal to work in the Imperial war machine their system is under full blockade.

Hows about one of the planets from SG1, like that one which had the crystal life force that allowed them to mimic humans for a while but they were fearful of gou'ald.
Or a planet where all the occupants live in domed cities strapped to chairs living out their lives in VR.

Excellent ideas. Here are a couple of twists.
(1) The crystals can't imitate lifeforms (too hard to do living things or whatever) but they can imitate droids. Maybe that's really why C3-P0 is so clueless! Razz

(2) Have the PCs get stunned somehow when they first land on the planet. Then run a landing on a new planet, interacting with the natives scenario. But eventually the PCs need to figure out that what they see isn't real because they are actually strapped into the chairs and everything they have experienced since landing is just a VR simulation. Twisted Evil Then they need to figure out how to end the simulation and wake up.

I went with option #2 and with sparti clones, even had clones of famous jedi there, who were not aware they were clones and had much of the originals knowledge and skills, to confuse the PCs. the Spaarti cloning system isn't really flawed and is better then the kaminoan system as the clones age at a normal rate when "Decanted", the danger of the spaarti system is trying to grow them in under 1 and 1/2 years... 2 years is better/safer/ mostlikely toavoid clone madnes...

being grown way too fast is what happened to old Joruus C'boath... Wink 8)

Never actually done an Unknown Regions campaign, but they open things up for a GM because by definition their unknown to the rest of the galaxy. The one thing I would not do would be to add our Earth. The SW galaxy is seperate from our Milky Way galaxy, as you recall the opening crawl specified the events of the movies happened in a galaxy far far away.

That depends on how you intereperate the metaphor: A Galaxy Far, Far, Away: most folks interperate it as another gaxlaxy far from ours while in the english laguage it can mean far away in the same galaxy, at the same time..... Galaxys are unimaginably huge things....

Also you didn't comment on my other ideas. What you think hellcat?

I did comment on them by saying that it's the Uknown Regions, meaning anything can happen.

And I have to disagree with the interpertation of a galaxy far far away. If it were in the same galaxy it would be a planet far far away or solar systems far far away. The crawl specifies a galaxy far far away, meaning it's more meant to say it's another galaxy.

Ok have it youre way in your games, I'll do it my way in mine Laughing 8) I rarely take anything in star wars literally, but treat it as the metaphor it is, the begining of a fairy tail that could mean anything. Wink What works for me need not work for you and vice-versa. But I think youre ignoring a potentially fun idea. Smile

Oh yeah Falcon79, Star Wars is definitely a modern myth /fairy tale.

I think you have some great ideas for your campaign. Best of luck and may the Force be with you. Smile
