|
|
I'm trying to wrap my head around skill rating in comparisons to some of the write-ups I see floating around in the books and here on The Pit. To my understanding the skill rating break down as so:
1D Below Human Average
2D Human Average
3D Average Level of Human Training
4D Professional Level of Human Training
5D Above Average Expertise
6D Best in a City/Geographic Area (1:100,000)
7D Best on a Continent (1:10,000,000)
8D Best on a Planet (1:100,000,000)
9D Best in Many Systems (1:1,000,000,000)
10D Best in a Sector
11D Best in a Region
14D+ Best in the Galaxy
So... if this is accurate, how could there be more than one Jedi at any given time whose skills were 6D, 7D, 8D, 9D, etc... since there were never more than 100,000 Jedi at any given time. Having a skill rating in the 5D and 6D is already pretty impressive, so why do I see Jedis with so many 6D+ Force Skills and lightsaber combat pools in the 16D+ range? _________________ "Told you, we did. Because the Jedi Order became an exception to the rule. They trained from their early childhood and literally never stopped. The skill rating breakdown is mostly for non-Jedi who never leave a planet, who never leave their hometown, and do literally the same basic stuff day in and day out.
Jedi are taught to continually challenge themselves and make their skills better. Thus why their dicepools are usually always the exception to the rules. |

The skill ratings include those who don't have the skill. So a Jedi at 8D in a Skill might be 1:100 amongst Jedi, but they're 1:several billion in the more general sense. _________________ Hotaru no Hishou; a messageboard about games, friends and nothing at all.

So in that rationale your 'average' Jedi should possess skills in the 7D+ range and mop the floor with anything that gets in his way? If that's the case then Dark Jedi should be sending PCs home in body bags with every encounter... and that makes for a boring story. _________________ "Told you, we did. Warned you, we tried. Not at all, because even Dark Jedi have to be "Adepts" at some point in time. And if you're scaling the big baddy to be the same power as the PC's well, you've a well developed and appropriate powered NPC. |

Given MAPs from activating powers and keeping them up I never find that a 7-8D Jedi mops anything actually... perhaps if the PCs are nice enough to attack one at a time.. |

If memory serves: I believe at that level you are beginning to do some cool things, but mopping up anyone is not one of those things. _________________ Do or Do Not ...there is no try. -Yoda |

Mop Up level actually seemd to come a little earilyr to me.
The transition point is when the character can relibly acticate and keep up lightsaber combat, and still have a few dice left over. Say 5D.
What tends to happen is that, thanks to the Lighsaber Combat power, Jedi can sort of double thier skil, and this allows them to outclass most non-Jedi characters-even the other PCs.
Yes, it take time to get to that point, and yes the other PCs will be advancing, but since he imrpvoment costs constinually increase, Jedi can usually be ahead, since it is cheaper to buy two skills at 6D than one skill at 12D. This tranlates into around a 3D edge vs. characters who spent the ssame number of CPs, and a lot more against those who haven't. That means mop up time. |

I'm fairly certain that chart isn't really meant for rarer skills like Lightsaber and the three Force skills. It's more of a comparison for common skills like Blasters, Dodge, Space Transport Piloting, and Brawling. |

I think Ankhanu is right, and the chart hold up for Lighsaber, too. I think it is just that in the films, we are being shown a lot of characters who are above average in the ability.
Yes we might see Yoda, Obi-won and Anakin all above 8D with Lightsaber, but we are not considering all the Padawan learners who are at 5D, or all the people who have never picked one up in their life and are defaulting to their DEX.
So the Jedi with Lightsaber 7D might indeed be the best on a planet, but then, he and his Padawan are probably the only ones with the skill above default.
About the only real discrepancy I see is that since Force Skills and Advanced skills start at 0D, they might be about 2D lower than the table suggest. |
