Does anyone know of a good Random Star System Generator? Preferably one based off the random tables in GG8: Scouts.
I've been looking all over for one, but haven't had any luck yet.
Thanks! _________________ Han - "How're we doin'?"

I think I have a random planet generator, but not one for an entire star system. _________________ __________________________________

Thanks Whill.
I fixed it in my post, too. _________________ Han - "How're we doin'?"

i'm the author of the system generator at donjon.bin.sh
unfortunately, GG8 isn't in my collection, so i'm unable to refer to it. i suppose i'll have to see if i can dig up a copy sometime. i'd guess that your primary interest is in generating star systems which favor 'interesting to visit' over scientific plausibility? what makes a system interesting to visit? |

Wow! thanks Drow... I forgot that the creation tables were originally presented in the Planets Collection books.
As far as scientific plausibility vs. interesting to visit... sometimes the most scientifically plausible systems ARE the most interesting to visit. Sometimes I just like running the random generators to see what comes up. Harsh planets with rich minerals could be interesting for a mining/scouting campaign. Habitable worlds are good for plopping down a new sentient race. Almost any world, no matter how suitable or not could make an interesting hideout for Rebels or Smugglers.
Back in college, I actually made my own text based sector generator based off the random tables in GURPS Space 3rd Ed. The problem was that it takes forever to sift through the text document.
PS - Keep up the good work! _________________ Han - "How're we doin'?"

the scifi system generator is pretty rigorous, insofar as accounting for stellar types, radiant flux, habitable zones, orbital radius and velocity, etc. there's a lot of astronomical data and large mathematical equations behind it all. it's also the most likely to give you 'one red dwarf, no planets'.
the swd6 system generator doesn't bother with the orbital calculations, but selects a nice star, places one interesting planet somewhere around it, and up to eight other planets. rock planets go closer in, ice planets go further out.
does it need anything else? _________________ Star Wars Name Generator

I couldn't get it to work, but I'd love to try it out. All I get is "SWd6 System Generator" above a black bar above a white bar above another black bar above the text "Based on tables from the Star Wars Planets Collection, by West End Games.

No buttons or anything like your other system generator, which works fine for me. Bummer. _________________ *

sorry to hear. it relies entirely on javascript, which may be an issue with some browsers, and i haven't had much time to check it across different platforms. nor time to implement a non-javascript version. _________________ Star Wars Name Generator

It's not working for me, either... just the black bars and a little six-sider shows up. _________________ Han - "How're we doin'?"

Ya I have IE7 at home, but only IE6 at work. Just like with Whill, the other system generator works just fine.
If you need help checking the javascript across platforms, let me know. And if you find the time to make a non-java version, that'd be awesome.
PS - If anyone would like my GURPS-based generator, let me know. It needs a serious overhaul, tho. It was written in C++ circa 1994. _________________ Han - "How're we doin'?"
