How many fill ups of a standard bacta tank do you get from a ton of bacta?

The volume of a cylinder = pi x radius^2 x height

If we estimate that a standard bacta tank is 1m in diameter and 2.5m in height (have to be able to accommodate those Wookiees).

Then the volume = pi x (.5m)^2 x 2.5 = 1.9634 cubic meters

1 cubic meter = 1000 Liters, so that's 1963.4 Liters

The mass of 1L of pure water is by definition = 1kg. If we agree that bacta is roughly the same mass/weight of water, then 1 Bacta tank contains about 2000kg of liquid... or two metric tons of liquid. (1000kg = 1 metric ton)

Wikipedia confirms that 1 cubic meter of water = 1 metric ton. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metric_ton So, assuming my equation for the volume of a cylinder is correct, the answer you are looking for is just under 2 tons.

So, assuming those calculations are right, the actual answer to your question is that you get half a fill of a Bacta Tank with one ton of bacta. So you better either be injured from your waist down, or be an ewok.

I also haven't found info on whether you need to change the bacta after each use or if it's good for multiple dunks.

The Lords of the Expanse boxed set had quite a bit of info about Bacta smuggling. Perhaps it's in there?

Ok, a couple of things...

Lets look at this picture first:

As you can clearly see, the patient is not upright in one, so two meters seem sufficient to accomodate even a wookiee. However the tank is much wider then 1 meter. In the case of the picture I'd say about 1.3 or 1.4 meters.

Second: We do not know the specific weight of Bacta. We assume it is the same as water, but we could be outright wrong. Then again, the patient is held afloat with the aid of a few belt weights. This indicates that the Bacta fluid is either very close to water or even a bit heavier, because if it was lighter, the body would sink to the ground.

Next question would be: Is the bacta fluid applied pure or is it i.e. mixed with water or a similar easy-to-aquire fluid? Wookieepedia says this about Bacta-Tanks: "It was imperative that bacta was applied in a solution of clear synthetic fluid which mimicked the body's own vital fluids. "

So, all of it taken into account, there are about 3 cubic meters of fluid in there of about water-like mass, equaling around 3 tons of mass. However, how much of that is true Bacta is *drumroll* GM's CHOICE!! *Tadaaaaa tshigabungdushhhh* Wink

Exclamation
I'd personally say (purely guessing on this, but those would be my ruling if I was the GM), you'l probably use about one kilogram (1/1000 ton) of bacta per day that someone is immersed, and a few grams per day to keep it in a ready-state if nobody is in there. For the first filling I suggest 30 kg of Bacta (3/100 ton) and the rest is the synthetic liquid.

If the patients are close enough in physiology (say a human and a Twi'lek) you don't need to change the fluid (just filter and sanitize it, sacrificing another 5 kilos). If you put in someone with a different physiology (say a Verpine), you need to pump the tank empty, usually store the activated Bacta in a safe place and fill the now empty tank with a new solution (costing you 30 kilograms again).

Overview:

First filling: 30 kg
Patient inside: 1 kg/day
No Patient inside: negligible, maybe a kilo per month
Cleaning after patient: 5 kg (if similar physiology, otherwise refill)

There is only one problem with the calculations that I can see. The problem lies with the issue of displacement. If we fill the bacta tank full, and then the wookiee gets in, then we've got bacta all over the floor.

How much you really need will roughly depend on the size of the person who is immersed.

However, to calculate the average use you'd get out of bacta, we have to calculate how much volume the average being in the universe has, and then deduct that from the previous bacta calculation.

There is a bacta article in one of the Adventure Journals, I'll see if it has any helpful details when I get home from work and can consult my library.

All things being equal, fat PCs displace more bacta. Laughing

Actually the amount of Bacta is the same. What differs is the amount of synthetic fluids needed to fill the tank. 8)

According to wookieepedia: "Bacta was a synthetic chemical substance that consisted of gelatinous, translucent red alazhi and kavam bacterial particles that were mixed within a colorless, viscous fluid known as ambori."

http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Bacta

So, the combined mixture of the colorless viscous fluid and the other stuff is what constitutes bacta.

True, but there still isn't all Bacta inside there if you read a bit lower. As I have already quoted: "It was imperative that bacta was applied in a solution of clear synthetic fluid which mimicked the body's own vital fluids." Wink

Looks like the wiki article needs clarification. Seems contradictory. The GM will have to make the call then.

Meanwhile, I hope we've at least given you some ideas and rough guidelines, Garhkal. Smile

And, to finalize this, what is the cost of Bacta?
