Has anyone ever seen a template for a droid engineer? (or just an engineer template that could be adapted to droids?) I'm sure I've seen this somewhere before, but I can't find it now. It was probably for first edition Star Wars.

I don't tend to use templates at all, so I'm not sure about if one exists... Did you check the Templates collection posted in the fan-made sourcebooks? I think most every official template is in there.

I swear that you're right and that there's a Droid Engineer template out there somewhere, but for the life of me, I can't find it.

Instead here are some templates that can easily be adapted:
Outlaw Tech
Sullustan Engineer
Tongue-tied Engineer
Weary Ship's Tech

Taking those examples, it wouldn't take too much to construct a template. Are you wanting to play a droid engineer, or is this just an academic interest for you?

If you need some help, I wouldn't mind putting in some effort on my free time (when I finally get some).

Yup.. The outlaw tech would be my best bet for a droid engineer.

Slicer also has the necessary skills to be a "droid engineer".
I figured if there was one anywhere, it would be in Cynnabar's but I checked and no luck.

To make a droid engineer, take any template with droid programming and repair, bump those up to 5D each, then take (A)Droid Engineering. Presto! More often than not, I simply change the title of a template to something else to make it more what I'm looking for.

Interesting, I read this post and thought Madwand was looking for an engineer who was a droid rather than an engineer who specalizes in droids.

I'm looking for an engineer specializing in droids. I'm certain I saw this a long time ago, because my first Star Wars (1st edition, I'm sure) PC took this template (somehow!). I'm just trying to retrace my steps and see if that template mentioned anything special.

Just make a droid engineer template. Creating templates is cake. Allocate 18D to 6 attributes. Write-up a brief background, personality, etc. Choose some appropriate starting equipment. In my very first campaign in 1988, I combined the Tongue-Tied Engineer and Outlaw templates to create a medical-droid-engineer-turned-cyborg-outlaw. For another early campaign, I created an Armor Technician template. Creating templates is fun!

Creating templates is easy enough, and also unnecessary. In fact, I don't even know why they exist: just pick the skills you want. In this case, though, it's not a matter of needing the template to create a PC, it's a matter of wanting to satisfy my curiosity. I remember this template, but can't find it anywhere.

I've looked extensively through my collection of books, though I only have 2Ed and 2EdR&E books, if it's a 1st edition template, I'm afraid I can't help you.

Way back when I was a newbie to SWd6 (many, many moons ago), templates were a good way to get started. They're great for helping new players get the feel for the system and get into character.

Once you're an expert with the system, yes, templates seem to be less and less necessary. However, they're still good for old coots like me when we get stuck or need inspiration or just plain can't decide on a character concept.

I think templates still have a place in SWd6 and it's a good exercise for GMs to come up with their own templates.

Here is one of my old templates i submitted here, with a few changes..

Alien Droid engineer

Mech 2D+2, skills: Astrogation, Communications, Repulsor ops
Per 3D+1, skills: Bargain Command, Search
Str 2D+1, skills: Brawl, Lift, Stamina
Tech 4D+2, Skills: Blaster repair, Droid programming, droid repair, First aid,

Starting equipment and benefits/hindrances: 5 sets mechanics coveralls, 2 full sets mechanics tools, ID, 3 Data pads, Com link, Blaster pistol (4D), 1000 credits std. Can't start or gain force sensitivity.
RACES ALLOWED – Verpine, Carosites, Chikarri, Gand, Ishi tib, Quarren, Pho Ph’eahian, Trianii
Note, IF droid programming AND/OR droid repair start at 5d, can purchase 1D of (A) Droid engineering (or droid programming engineering) for 2D of starting skill points. Also assumes a 7K debt to a school house.

Alien Droid engineer
Born into a mechanically minded race, you took up the time honored (and racially stereotypical) job of Mechanic. You surprised even your parental units, with your level of skill. Unlike, all others, without any formal training, you were repairing things, in half the time, those with greater training and education were. Soon, the elders declared it was time for you to go. Unlike many of your kind, you prefered small stuff, droid mainly, over working on the more prestigious starships. This has led you to the criminal underground where many people wish upgrades to their droids but do not have the proper way to do it themselves..

Outgoing, and somewhat of a practical joker. Very happy when repairing, modifying or tinkering with droids.
