For those that like to be devious, here are a couple of tricks I have pulled or will pull:
A group of good aligned PCs have come across a distress signal from space. Answering the distress beacon, the PCs fight off pirates attacking a courier ship. Aboard the courier ship is a very influential and powerful Galactic Senator who promises a favor to the PCs "if ever they are in dire need."
When it comes time in their darkest hour to call upon their favor from this senator, they find out he's been arrested, tried and executed for Treason by the Empire!
OR:
A group of smugglers finally get the upper hand on an Imperial customs agent by aquiring compromising evidence that could get him charged with corruption and high treason.
But when they are stopped by this customs agent and try to blackmail him, it turns out that there's been a "restructuring" in the local heirarchy and their compromising evidence can no longer be put to use. _________________ "We attack under cover of daylight.
