I was designing a character this morning and came to this:
The character is the child of a Jedi Master, but isn't force sensitive. The father gave the character a LOT of training in lightsaber combat, so do you think my new character should be able to use lightsaber combat abilities like deflect, even though it is under a force power? I was leaning toward yes because of the training, but it is still a force skill.
Any opinions? _________________ "Your lack of faith disturbs me." - Vader |

Most certainly not. No matter how good you are, deflecting blaster bolts is a super-human feat. I might only allow it on an extra-mega-hyper-successful roll, once in a blue moon. _________________ "He's Gry Sarth, of course he has the stats for them." |

I have a race of non force using people, whos racial weapon, is like a lightsaber. And i allow THEM to deflect bolts, but as follows.
First, must have BUILT their own weapon (which is assumed for most pc templates), and attuned themselves to it (50cp and 6months of time to do so). Then the target number to deflect it is based on the range the opponent is at.
Opponent is at long range (eg 80meters +), the roll is targets to hit roll +15.
Opponent is at medium range (eg 40-80m), to hit+25
Opponent closer than 40... cannot deflect. _________________ Confucious sayeth, don't wash cat while drunk! |

Not to pick apart this race of people... but everything I'd seen said that an individual attunes themselves to their lightsaber via the Force... so unless your race has a modicum (untappable, perhaps, but present) of Force sensitivity, how do you explain their attunement process? Is it a mental discipline they have? Is it through genetic recognition? |

When isay non force using i mean jedi like... they still have force sensitives (heck most of them are), and can still 'tap into it'... _________________ Confucious sayeth, don't wash cat while drunk! |

Sure, but just because it's there doesn't mean you can do anything with it. _________________ Hokey religions and ancient weapons are no match for a good blaster at your side, kid. |

Well sure, but then there's no point in making any distinction between mundanes and Force sensitives. You can do it, but it screws up game balance, unless you declare that everyone is indeed Force sensitive, with all of the advantages AND disadvantages that come with that. _________________ Hokey religions and ancient weapons are no match for a good blaster at your side, kid. |

I would rule that the kid could only deflect blaster bolts by spending CPs or a Force Point, considering that it's the only way a non Force sensitive can tap into the Force. Of course, this would rob them of their only FP if they were doing it to simply save their own butts. _________________ Check out some of my games at DriveThruRPG!

I think I'd have to agree with Jamfke on that one. Sure, the race as a whole is generally Force-sensitive, but unless they're trained to actually use it properly (and not necessarily by a proper Jedi, mind you) then it ought to cost them something to 'tap into it.' |

It states quite clearly in the description of the lightsaber skill that it is possible for a non force using character to deflect blaster bolts using just the skill but that it is very very difficult, so with difficult being 25 and heroic being 30 the difficulty can reasonably be assumed to be about 28 and needing to roll 28 or more just using skill looks quite reasonable to me. |

I don't think that "very, very difficult" was intended to be interpreted literally as a difficulty between Very Difficult and Heroic, especially since there is no in-between. Difficulty levels are ranges, not a set number; Difficult is between 16-20, VD is between 21-30 and Heroic is 30+. 28 is still Very Difficult.
It would be beyond the Heroic level for someone without Lightsaber Combat active to deflect a blaster bolt... I'd probably only allow it with a roll of 40+ beyond the attacker's roll, or maybe with less if a Force Point is being spent and it's dramatically appropriate. _________________ Hotaru no Hishou; a messageboard about games, friends and nothing at all.

I always assumed the difficulty to parry a blaster bolt was dependant on the firer's Blaster roll.
The Jedi would merely need to beat this number; however, if you added difficulty to the firer's roll, it would be harder to parry for the non-Jedi.
IE Steve the Stormtrooper shoots at Jack the Jedi. Steve rolls his 4d Blaster and gets a.... I don't know, a 13. Jack rolls his Lightsaber (after MAPs) and gets a 15. He has parried the bolt. _________________ Blasted rules. Why can't they just be perfect? |
