I'm setting up a four to five session campaign this winter for some kids in my youth group. It's becoming a bit of a January tradition at this point.

Anyway, one of the guys is wanting to play a Gen'Dai. According to Gry's Alien Stats the Gen'Dai can get twice as much damage per wound level as a normal character. I'm telling the player that I'm really apprehensive about this character, mostly because any combat that would be risky for him could easily wipe out his compatriots.

Would you allow a Gen'Dai in your campaign?

*breaks out Gry's book*

*ponders* Gen'dai... .. amazing physiology... double amount of damage points... Healing hibernation... recover 1 level every 1D rounds... reattach severed limb... or regenerate limb...

Hmm...

No. Not unless you were going to do a high powered campaign... say... with Noghri, Duinuogwuin, Galidyn, Dathomirian Rancors, etc...

Just kinda broken - if you put it with your standard fare of beginning characters... you'd pretty much either have to kill the rest of the party to do any damage to him, or do all the damage to him while letting the rest of the party hide/evade/dodge/etc... either way... it wouldn't be quite fair...

Agreed. No Gen'dai players in any campaign of mine. Not only would it be terribly unbalanced, but I also find the species to be quite ridiculous. It's just a means to have a bad guy that keeps on coming back, no matter how many tiny bits you chop him into. T1000 might have been cool, but Durge is just a poor rehash...

Unless perhaps you made him run a KID.

While he can still soak damage, you can restrict his stats due to young age.

i would say no. i've only used gen'dai once and that was when a player pissed off a hut thinking that being a barabell he could take on any of the hutt's assassins. then the gen'dai walked in, in power armor. the players ran, very fast, out of the complex and left the planet. they are still being hunted.

It's still possible to take them down. Say they have 4D in strength even if the bad guys can only stun them if you do it four times in a combat that still results in them being knocked out and from there well do what you must Twisted Evil

That being said the background would have to be fantastically amazing before I allowed it.

And if nothing else, use weapons that don't do wound damage, such as poison, gas, KO weaponry and such.

Hum, depends on setting and the likliness of combat. Also if you use stormies you can allways use combined fire at it. So i say mabye.

I'm afraid I have to agree with the concensus here. They seem like a really poorly written bad guy from a 1970's B sci-fi horror movie. Totally rediculous as a player character.

Lower the difficulty for the Gen'dai character to get hit while keeping it normal for the other characters. Like say it's a moderate roll for a stormie to hit the characters, it then becomes easy for the stormie to hit just the Gen'dai. And consider making it take twice as long to recover from any kind of damage for the Gen'Dai. Stunned becomes -1D for four rounds and one hour (stunned being -1D for the rest of the round their stunned in and the next round while still be affected by the stun for a half hour). Weapons set to Stun knock the Gen'Dai out for 4D minutes rather than 2D minutes. Incapacitated is 20D minutes unconcious rather than 10D minutes.

Unfair? Yes. But at the same time this way you can make things more dangerous for the Gen'dai without making them too difficult for the others.

Or focus on non-combat gaming; that way its bonuses simply don't come in to play.

I was primarily playing Rifts with my game group for a while and I was a Cyber-Doc in a Merc setting. So, I know what it was like to have to deal with over powered enemies just to put the Men At Arms up to a challenge. The GM was very good at setting up non combat missions or other side missions that scaled properly to where the characters stand physically, and it turned out fine. Our campaign lasted 18 months.

It sounds like this player is only looking at stats and not the game as a whole. Ask the player the one thing that he likes best about the Gen'dai and try to find a compromise. Without some serious draw backs, I don't think I would ever allow one in a campaign as is.
