What is the price for buying advanced skill at character creation. Im sure i read it somewhere, but now cant find it :S

I know you can trade 1D for 3D in specializations, but can you do 2 for 1 in advanced?

I've never read an official rule on this; I'm curious myself.

Initially I would have said 2D of starting skill dice for 1D of an advanced skill (provided the character met the prerequisites, of course). But after thinking about it I'd say that a decent argument could be made for making it cost 3D of starting skill dice. You spend half the normal amount of Character Points to improve a specialization, and get 3D (3 specializations at 1D) for 1D of starting skill dice. The inverse of this would be that you spend twice the normal amount of Character Points to improve an advanced skill, and get 1D in an advanced skill for 3D of starting skill dice. Honestly as a GM I would probably rule that it cost 2D of starting skill dice though, simply because the character has in all likelihood had to spend at least 1D of starting skill dice already just to meet the prerequisite(s).

It is a strange thing that 2nd Edition R&E only gives Medicine as an Advanced skill. I know I've seen others, specifically Starship Engineering.

At any rate, an Advanced skill can be purchased similarly to any other skill at creation on a 1 for 1 basis, but you have to meet the Advanced skill's prerequisites to do so. Using Medicine as they do in the book, you have to have at least 5D in First Aid before you can buy the 1D in Medicine. If you do not purchase the skill, the rules say to simply cross it off your sheet, suggesting to me that you can't just pick it up later.

Now, since there are no other skills listed in the rule book itself as being Advanced, I'd say you'd have to use Medicine as a guideline for any Advanced skills you want to create. The book does say that you have to have a minimum of 5D in the base skill before you can take on the Advanced one.

So, something like (A)Droid Engineering should have Droid Programming/Repair as the base skill and you should have at least 5D in it to put 1D to Droid Engineering.

Make sense?

For me, unless there is something in the template write up (egg ships doctor says if he starts at having first aid at 5d or more he can get Medicine at 1d) then they have to learn it in game.

There are very few advanced skills, and very few rules on them. I think they're more of an NPC thing, really.

Few PCs are going to take out a few years to go to the University of Tattooine and learn "Civil Starship Engeneering" or some such, are they?

Few would take the time to develop such skills in formal schooling; but that's not to say that various characters wouldn't be set up that way. For example; I have created a 53 year old starship engineer, who did go to university for his degree(s). It kind of depends on character plan and life history.

That doesn't really help those of us who don't use the templates, though.

'Course, there's the other alternative...

"Hey! Wrrarrah has been around for 700 years! Been in more battles and wars than anyone on the ship! She should know about surgery!"

*Wookiee Howling*

"What did she say?"

"Well, not so much a degree, as a lot of practical experience... Four hundred years of it."

I seem to remember seeing a fan-created list of skills that included a number of Advanced skills on it. If I can find it I'll post it here somewhere.

That's actually a different one than I'd found, but it's a good list. Thanks!
