One of the characters in our sparks campaign has made himself Lava Dragon armor, which grants him +8D to soak energy... Is that too out there? _________________ Confucious sayeth, don't wash cat while drunk! |

Umm... ok...
1 - What the hell is Lava Dragon Armor?
2 - Not if all the baddies start using blunt force trauma weapons.
otherwise.... yah, I can kinda see that being just a little overpowered. _________________ "Love like you will die tomorrow. Hate like you will live forever." - Unknown |

In the novel Jedi Search, there was a creature called a Lava dragon, who's scales allowed it to survive in lava. This guy says the group managed to hunt down and kill one, then made a suit of armor for him out of it (even though he is a barbel and already has enough armor/strengh to practically resist a heavy Eweb).. _________________ Confucious sayeth, don't wash cat while drunk! |

Well it's very powerful that's for sure but it all depends on the type of game.
If you're running predominantly space battles then it doesn't matter as an exploded spaceship is still likely to be fatal.
I do have one question though. If these scales are heat proof then won't the barbel be prone to overheating and well dying while wearing this amour. Especially if he has to engage in physical activity.
Or are Barbels cold blooded? in which case he'd be insulated completely from all heat sources and he'll freeze to death or at the very least become very, very lethargic. _________________ Don't waste money on expensive binoculars.

It's a little ridiculous, yeah.
Of course, it'd do nothing against things like poisons and disease... |

How exactly did they kill the lava dragon AND save its remains to make the armor? If I remember correctly, they don't leave the lava much if at all, and Luke had a pretty hard time with the one fought, despite being a Jedi Master.
I would make the PCs have to endure an adventure that left each and every one of them in bacta in order for one of them to get something even half that powerful. Squash the munchkins. _________________ Arek | Kage |

Well, like Luke, they'd have had to have something tough enough to take just a chip out; once the lava was in it'd do the rest, eating the beast from the inside out. Surely the armor would survive even that, and the added bonus would be that the innards would all be cleaned out.
The problem, of course, would be retrieving said armor from the lava, and then actually forming it into armor wearable by someone other than the original owner. The worm's skin is tough enough to refract a lightsaber blade, so it stands to reason you'd need something that did at least 5D damage to even cut, let alone shape the stuff.
IMO this would be so hard to do, it'd require at least a whole campaign to achieve, provided the GM wished to allow it. You could argue that such beasts are too rare and impossible to say where they're at. You could allow them to try, but justifiably have such high difficulty numbers that they'd never succeed, even if they burned ALL their FPs at once. That way you at least let them try. |

Wouldn't say that's much of a bonus, since all that would happen is the nice tender innards would be replaced by liquid (then solid) rock |

now there are other ways then just taking it off him. since it is so rare, you can have people looking to get it from him. attack in the night. all with big @$$ grenades.
and the armour probably only adds to torso absorption so thats bye-bye arms legs and head _________________ The Vong have Arrived

I've had this discussion before, don't remember if it was here or at the Jedi Council Forums.
Anyway, we came to a few conclusions then:
- After the animal was dead, the hide probably wouldn't maintain all of its natural properties. It would no longer be "living" so something would have to go, some of its integrity would be degraded. It would take an EXCELLENT armourer to preserve it just right, so it would retain a bonus of 6D at most.
- The hide is tough, solid, and not meant to be molded into armor for humanoids. Even in the hands of an expert armourer, the final product would certainly be still bulky and cumbersome, inflicting a Dexterity penalty of AT LEAST -1D, most likely -2D.
Concluding, I believe you would have to be an awesome armourer (Armor Repair of over 8D) to make a decent Lava Dragon Armor. And that's not even getting into the whole "how did you get the hide" business. _________________ "He's Gry Sarth, of course he has the stats for them." |

Also, don't forget the -3D Dexterity penalty...

I suppose the question is not really do we think this amour should have penalties or should it be all but impossible to acquire it is: If the amour exists as I've described it and one of the players has it is it too powerful?
If the amour is +8D to energy, full coverage amour with no dex penalties then yes I think it is too overpowered for all but the most lethal of games. Of course if the enemies are all armed with overcharged magna casters then that amour really won't do anyone much good. _________________ Don't waste money on expensive binoculars.

If that's the question, then yes. Way overpowered. Human beings wearing armor shouldn't be able to shrug off 12D damage on an average roll. _________________ "He's Gry Sarth, of course he has the stats for them." |

Seems like everyone has ahd a case where a GM/Dm hands a player somethign he will regret later. And as players we are always looking for that little edge _________________ ***witty remark under construction - coming soon to a board near you*** |

IIRC full coverage, 2d dex penalties (though powersuit ops is a mech skill and brawl is a Str skill).. _________________ Confucious sayeth, don't wash cat while drunk! |
