Can you guys help me?
I've been searching for Star wars musical instruments, but all I've found is:
*Chidinkalu - basicly a large bass horn
*the all known Kloo Horn
*Synth-Harmonica
*Growdi - a combination water-organ and flute
*Hydromonica
*Red Ball Organ
*Slitherhorn
These last three I don't know what are.
What other musical instument do you know of or have you used in your campaigns? _________________ Commander Bluunis signing off |

Eh, I make stuff up. I pick an area of instrument type, half the time I add some kind of electronic enhancment to it, and than slap on a name.
There are a ton of instruments in that way, and wind instruments of all kinds can get infinite ranges of sound when hydraulics and computers are involved in adjusting the tone, valves, and vibrations. It ends up make keyboards seem limited and clumsy to creatures, proportionaly to having less limbs with which to control the keyboard.
More limbs and/or more ways to respire of course expand possibilities with insturments.
I also added the holophoner from Futurama. It has yet to actually make an appearance in game, but I have decided it is there. And yeah, only 6 people in the universe can play it, and only two of them ar any good at it. _________________ My backpack has jets!

Is there such thing as stats for musical instruments? There is a skill for playing them, so how would the Gm decide the difficulty? In one adventure, my PC has a Music Ball , which is a ball that you shake to produce a song. Pretty much anyone can do that. _________________ The ability to type does not make you intelligent. |

Well, rule of thumb bro. How difficult is the instrument and the song the character is attempting to play? All acounted, is it Easy? Difficult? Very Easy? Very Difficult? Moderate?
Get the picture?
As for the skill, it's called "Musical Instrument Operation" though I don't think they mention under which attribute it's located. It could be argued it's under KNW, PER or even TEC....
I'd go with PER. _________________ "He's Gry Sarth, of course he has the stats for them." |

Thumbing through the books (got to come home to my collection for a day!) the Musical Instrument Operation skill is under Mechanical. I can kind of see this (pressing keys might equal pressing buttons and flipping switches) but maybe WEG didn't know where else to put it. _________________ Aha! |

Now that I finally got to come home to my books, I see you are correct. Musical Instruments Operation is under MEC, which kinda makes sense. Operating machinery goes generally under MEC and it seems most Star Wars instruments are pretty technological. Still, I'd be ok if one of my players wanted to change it into another attribute, or making it combined skill. The mechanical part of instrument playing (pressing keys, etc) falls under MEC, but there's an expression part, putting your feelings into it, moving the audience, that really feels more like PER. And then there's the question of knowing all the songs and understanding each style's fundaments, which belongs in KNW.
All in all, I'd say a musician should have the MEC skill Musical Instrument Operation, and he should also have the KNW skill Scholar: Music, in order to know songs, improvise, etc...
PS: Ah, now I see I was correct in my thinking! The members of the Modal Nodes have the KNW skills Scholar: Music and also Scholar: Music Composition. They also have the TEC skill Musical Instrument Repair. _________________ "He's Gry Sarth, of course he has the stats for them." |

That's why Fiery Fi'grin is the best! 8)
Ok, with complimentary skills like Scholar: Music, would you give some sort of synergy bonus to the perfomance skill? _________________ Aha! |

Definetly. Even though Scholar: Music can be used on its own in things like discussing music theory, remembering the name of a given composer or a specific song, it should also play a roll in the actual playing. I'd make the player roll it if someone asked for a song and the player tried to remember and play it properly. Depending on the success of that roll, I'd assign a modifier to the Musical Instruments Operation skill. So if it's an extraordinary success, then the player knows that song by heart and is very familiar with it, playing it is a breeze. If he barely makes the roll, then he struggling to remember the tune as it goes, so it's a bit tricky. If he fails miserably, then he has no idea what he's going to play, so it's a guaranteed fiasco.
Things like that.... _________________ "He's Gry Sarth, of course he has the stats for them." |
