OK, this just occurred to me.

If you have a character, that is in the book with pre-made stats like one of the movie hero's or a generic storm trooper, with the following...

Dexterity 3D
Blaster 5D

Does this mean that said character has 2D blaster skill + 3D Dex. to = 5D. Or...
Does this mean that said character has 5D blaster skill + 3D Dex. to = 8D.

I've been doing this so long I should know this but we all just took at face value that Blaster 5D meant, roll 5D for this chr. to hit.

Is this in the rule book some where and I missed it?

IIRC, when you assign the 18D attribute code (or choose a character template), all skills under that attribute is the same. So in this case, you get

Dexterity 3D
Blaster 3D
all other Dexterity-based skills 3D

Then you assign the 7D in skill and put 2D from it into blaster, then we get

Dexterity 3D
Blaster 5D (which is 3D+2D)
all other Dexterity-based skills still 3D.

So it's not a + bonus dice, but the actual die code.

hish is right. DEX 3D +2D = Blaster 5D. NPC stats work just the same as on your player character sheets. If a skill is not listed under an attribute in the stat block, that means they have the base attribute as the default skill. If the skill is listed as higher than the base attribute, then that value is the skill. It is not added to the base attribute.

There is a temptation by all newbies to write their skill die codes as a +2D in addition to their attributes. I will highly recommend that you resist that urge. It only creates confusion in the long run, particularly when it comes to character advancement. So, when you're adding the skill dice, add them to the attribute before writing them down. That way you'll always know how many dice you should be rolling and how many CPs it takes to advance.

Just to clarify.

I'm only talking about NPC's in a book. I understand about pc's and advancement.

I'm saying if I look at Luke Skywalker in a book and it says he has 3D Dex. and a blaster skill of 5D, that I as a GM am suposed to only roll 5D for him to hit with a blaster not 8D.

Which is what I believe every one said. Smile So thanks guys.

Yup, PCs and NPCs are treated exactly the same.

I have lost count of the number of times especially at convention games, where i have had to correct someone on this.
