Looking at that long hanger, I considered that the empire might use them like the star galleon as the long hanger bay would be great converted as a cargo bay since it seems that the individual hangers seem to have some shielding around them which adds some protection for dangerous cargo. The venator would also be capable of defending itself against most pirates and it's two side hangers could hold around two squadrons for anti fighter defense. |
That’s not outside the realm of possibility, but would more likely be used in special circumstances than in regular service. While the stats don’t accurately reflect it, warships are a very uneconomical way to transport cargo. Fuel consumption alone would make it a poor choice for all but the most high-threat environment. Plus, while a carrier can be jury-rigged to carry cargo, its cargo handling and securing equipment will never be as good as those of a ship designed from the outset to haul cargo.
A permanent conversion as a cargo hauler is possible; per the EU, many of the old Acclamator-Class Assault Ships have been reconfigured as armed cargo transports.
An extension of the armed cargo transport idea would be to convert the Venator into an armed underway replenishment ship. The ability to keep pace with a task force and defend itself from attack while keeping the force’s Consumables stocked up could come in handy... _________________ "No set of rules can cover every situation. If we look at the footage from the movies and canon animated series we actually do see the hangar insides of the venator.
If we take the the long hangar door, this "only" leads to the empty space, where ships are given a "ramp" to fly out.
On each side of the "hall or ramp" the hangars look like "boxes" stacked next to eachother, at both sides of the "hall opening" the hangars seems to have the same type of atmosphere shielding as we see on regular hangars.
Something like this seen from above.

H R H
H= Hangar "box"
R= Runway
On that Note, we know the Empire used in numbers ISDs that had the hangar removed (though they still would have a mini hangar for 1-2 shuttle, as this would make sense)
So making the reverse customization, Adding extra hangar space at the cost of passenger and cargo capacity.
So I would say that almost any ship can be turned into almost anything, if you have the means and the time.
Now as to regular "line" units we seldom or ever see anything "experimental" or customized, as this would be too costly for the gain |
