Same. They overload circuitry enough to disrupt/shut down systems for a short while..

But ion damage only requires repair at the highest level (Controls Dead, which is the Ion Damage equivalent of "Dead" or "Destroyed"). Other than that, it is a temporary effect that wears off at a rate of 1D per round.

The real-world explanations of ions and electricity are a great help here. Since electrical current is dependent on the swapping of electrons (negatively charged atomic particles), a blast composed of positively charged ions (i.e. ions that have lost an electron) will strip electrons from electrically conductive materials (wires, cables, circuitry, etc). As such, electricity and electronic signals will be disrupted until the ions dissipate or are absorbed sufficiently to return the electronics to equilibrium.

However, it's questionable what sort of effect that would have on organics. The fact that ion cannon under the SW D6 rules makes no provision for ion weaponry damaging people strongly indicates that it either has no effect or that the crew spaces of ships are somehow shielded from ion attacks.

My thinking is that any damage suffered by an organic would either be primarily the result of kinetic impact from the particles or from secondary or tertiary static discharge effects.

In the case of armor, however, protecting the wearer from electrical charge effects could be as simple as a non-conductive body glove and a grounding array that deflects electrical charge into the ground.
