Rogue One is getting an IMAX theatrical rerelease for a few days starting August 26th. Supposedly there is an exclusive look (clip) of Andor going to be shown with it, but I don't really care about that. We are going just to see RO in the theater again, for the first time in 5.5 years. I got to see TESB in the theater a few months ago too, so I get to see two good Star Wars movies in the theater this year.

Saturday was a busy day with Rogue One and then my son's birthday celebration, and I forgot to post about the movie. Seeing RO in the theater for the first time in 5.5 years was awesome. Definitely the best Disney Wars film. It's very well made, a veritable "neoclassic" Star Wars masterpiece. I really enjoyed it!

The completion of Andor has prompted many fans to rewatch Rogue One, and the complaint about Artoo and Threepio's cameo is popular on the internet again, which reminded me of this thread's discussion. I rewatched RO this past weekend and noticed a couple more things. Let's first go back to Revenge of the Sith, which I recently watched in the theater...

Quote:
BAIL ORGANA: Captain Antilles.

CAPTAIN ANTILLES: Yes, Your Highness.

BAIL ORGANA: I'm placing these droids in your care. Treat them well. Clean them up. Have the protocol droid's mind wiped.

Captain Antilles is the officer in command of the Alderaanian Senator's starship, from before RotS to A New Hope. At some point before RO, Bail becomes a retired senator (to more actively lead the Rebellion) and his adoptive-daughter Leia Organa takes over his Imperial Senator role. Now let's jump to RO...

Quote:
BAIL ORGANA: I must return to Alderaan to inform my people that there will be no peace. We will need every advantage.

MON MOTHMA: Your friend, the Jedi.

BAIL ORGANA: He served me well during the Clone Wars and has lived in hiding since the Emperor's purge. Yes, I will send for him.

MON MOTHMA: You'll need someone you can trust.

BAIL ORGANA: I would trust her with my life. [Organa turns away from Mothma and toward Captain Antilles.]

BAIL ORGANA: Captain Antilles, I have a mission for you.

CAPTAIN ANTILLES: Senator.

Antilles was there at the Rebel base on Yavin 4. It has been established that at this time, his starship (the Tantive IV) was getting repaired inside of the Alliance Fleet's flagship of the day, the Profundity, commanded by Admiral Raddus. As we know from ANH, Leia is who Bail sent for his Jedi friend, Master Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Quote:
REBEL PRIVATE: Intercepted Imperial transmission, ma'am. 'Rebels on Scarif.'

MON MOTHMA: I need to speak to Admiral Raddus.

REBEL PRIVATE: He's returned to his ship. He's going to fight.

He didn't say Raddus' ship had left for Scarif yet. Just that he's returned to his ship. It was so soon after the transmission that he very likely had only just gotten on his shuttle to go up to his ship in orbit.

Quote:
REBEL ANNOUNCER ON THE HANGER PA SYSTEM: Attention all flight personnel, please report to your commanders immediately. We have been redirected to Scarif. Pilots, you'll be briefed by your squadron leaders on route. May the Force be with you.

THREEPIO: Scarif? They're going to Scarif? Why does nobody ever tell me anything, Artoo?

CRMcNeill wrote:
And Threepio's line really doesn't make sense; who clears a combat scramble with a protocol droid?

The combat scramble to attack Scarif can clearly be heard on the hanger PA system, and the droids were shown in the hanger. Threepio's line was in direct response to the PA announcement he had literally just heard. It really does make sense.

In my mind, immediately after their scene a rebel comes up to them and hurriedly urges them onto a nearby shuttle that takes them up to the the Profundity.

That's possible, I guess; I just have a hard time picturing a pair of droids being worth the effort of being whisked onto a shuttle just to have them onboard for a major battle.

The droids were not whisked on a shuttle to join the battle. They were whisked on a shuttle, likely by their master Captain Antilles who had already been shown on Yavin 4, to return to their ship because of the mission Antilles had been given to support Leia seeking the aid of Kenobi. It just so happened that their ship was currently inside of another ship that was going to the battle at Scarif.

Quote:
IMPERIAL COMMANDER: The rebel flagship is disabled, my lord, but has received transmission from the surface.

DARTH VADER: Prepare a boarding party.

The disabled rebel flagship had received the transmission of the Death Star plans, and Alderaanian Rebels got the new hardcopy of the plans onto the Tantive IV, which then launched out of the disabled flagship, barely escaping Vader. The hardcopy was then given to Leia.

Leia's original mission had nothing to do with the Death Star plans. Leia's mission was to find Kenobi. The droids go where she goes and Captain Antilles takes them there. But in the Battle of Scarif, she ended up with the plans too.

It was a wise narrative choice to not overtly reveal that the Tantive IV was even at the Battle of Scarif, for maximum dramatic effect when it blasts out of the Profundity at the end of the film. The audience knowing that Threepio, Artoo, and Leia were at the battle would ruin that first time viewing experience. The droids' cameo was certainly not absolutely necessary for RO, but it is meaningful to see them for the sake of the greater franchise narrative since they are so important to the continuation of the Death Star plot in ANH. Since the droids mainly have a comedic role in the films, they would not fit the tone appearing at the end of RO. So they appeared on Yavin 4 at the last possible moment in the film before they would have been overtly revealed as going to Scarif.

The dramatic ending of RO was cleverly hinted at with subtle plot points, and I find that it all makes sense.

CRMcNeill wrote:
I'd also say that the Tantive IV's consular ship identity was sufficiently worth maintaining that having it blatantly in league with the Alliance in a manner that couldn't be hidden from the Empire was a mistake. In my own head canon, I picture the Tantive IV faking engine trouble in the outer reaches of the system, just like in the radio dramas. The Darth Vader scene works just as well if he's trying to storm the Profundity's bridge before it can relay the signal from Scariff out to the Tantive, and doing it that way offers the same veneer of plausibility for the ship's diplomatic status. Leia and Antilles' assertion of "consular ship on a diplomatic mission" was reduced to utter BS with Vader literally looking at the plans being physically taken aboard the ship as it escapes.

Quote:
LEIA ORGANA: I'm a member of the Imperial Senate on a diplomatic mission to Alderaan!

DARTH VADER: You are part of the Rebel Alliance and a traitor! Taker her away!

IMPERIAL COMMANDER: Holding her is dangerous. If word of this gets out, it could generate sympathy for the Rebellion in the senate.

VADER: I have traced the Rebel spies to her. Now she is my only link to find their secret base!

COMMANDER: She'll die before she tells you anything.

VADER: Leave that to me. Send a distress signal and then inform the senate that all aboard were killed!

Leia and Antilles' assertion was utter BS, and Vader obviously knew they were Rebels in 1977. As RO and now Andor emphasize above and beyond the original drama of ANH itself, the mission to defeat the Death Star was significantly more important than maintaining any veneer of plausibility about their day jobs. Bail Organa was already suspected of being a Rebel sympathizer, so it wouldn't be a stretch for the Empire to suspect his daughter's involvement as well. Plus, it is extremely likely that Leia could see the writing on the wall about the Senate's impending dissolution. However, Leia was an astute politician herself, so it is possible she said what she said to manipulate them into fearing the PR issue if word of this gets out, just like the commander said.

One thing i am surprised at is why is it ONLY The profundity, receive the broadcast? DID none of the other rebel ships in orbit get it?
