I don't spend a lot of time watching videos, especially long ones. But I watched this one and I'll be damned if Mark Hamill himself doesn't just exactly speak some of my own feelings about the DT.
Below is the direct link to 7:01-8:04. There is a fundamental difference between "George Lucas Star Wars" and the Star Wars of today.
https://youtu.be/WKlo-plLJZI?t=421
Below is toward the end of the video. Lucas Star Wars was a complete story with an ending. Hamill describes giving Lucas a hug after they both first screened TFA.

When he talked about the lightsaber flying out of the snow I immediately thought of this. Glad to find it, I hadn't seen it since it aired in 1999.

It was the golden age of Weekend Update...
"Jake Skywalker" and "this Star Wars" is pretty close to my modern reconcilliation with the PT and ST. It's like we've got episodes 1-9 of the same series but from 9 different Earth's. Each one doesn't quiiiite make sense in relation to the one or ones before. Like our episode 5 is the continuation of episode 4 from the dimension where Kennedy wasn't shot or something. |

Well as has been pointed out to me by others, you don't need Episode 1 to have Episode 2. It's like Ep. 2 is the sequel to something else entirely, or that it was what Lucas thought Episode 1 would be back in like 1978. ROTJ has the twin sister retcon, ESB has the lineage retcon.
And of course even people who like watching them will usually agree that the films of the newest trilogy don't even try to follow each other.
I find a big majority of the relationships in the three trilogies completely unbelievable. Whether I were to blame casting, acting, writing, or something else. It's just impossible for me to emotionally buy-in that such and such two actors are the same character at different points in its life, or that these characters are that one's parents. As opposed to say, when I watched Mixed-ish, the prequel sitcom to Black-ish. They're just stock sitcoms, but they did a really good job making it seem like I was watching the same characters/family some 30 years earlier.
That inability to carry a relationship or a character across films is also a big part of why I feel like I'm watching 9 movies from 9 alternate earths. Solo does this too. |

I can agree that characters are rough - and overall can relate to your point.
However, a few exceptions for me - and I have to admit, my perception is skewed as I have watched (and like the later seasons) of the animated clone wars.
Some of the characters that feel consistent to me;
kenobi.
I really feel like that is the same character. I think ewan mcgregor did a great job, as did the writing in clone wars.
Lando
I felt that lando in solo was a good fit - as was the brief bits in rebels.
Tarkin
I think he was good in clone wars, and nailed it in rogue one.
Back to reaction on TLJ:
I could go on - but it is getting off topic a bit, since this is about TLJ - which I find to be high budget poorly written fan fiction - in fact, calling it poor fan fiction is an insult to most fan fiction I have read - where people who are willing to devote time to a topic - at least understand the setting and characters.
TFA was a trite reboot - with unbelievable character choices (note - I am distinguishing between unpopular and unbelievable) and pathetically executed troupes (oh look, we need to be rebels again, because we can't come up with a new story - and oh, we have to raise the stakes even higher - now we have a bigger badder death star (tm)). I mean, in ROTJ luke was willing to risk the entire rebellion because he felt there was still good in his father, but willing to kill his nephew over a bad dream in TFA? wtf? Don't even get me started on the pirate treasure map quest of "I don't want to be found, but I do, so here are the hidden pieces to map to find me" wtf?
TLJ - was a complete cinematic failure on so many levels that it was utterly sad - again, really bad tropes - oh look - want them to be the underdog constantly and running constantly - so, when it gets boring in a space chase, go to a casino planet where no one knows us to chase us, so the plot justification for being an "underdog" fugitive is - we double parked on the beach?
Read that again and think about it. RJ was so inept at story - and driven to make them "rebels" - that the only flimsly justification he could come up with for them to be on the run from the big mean authority - is a parking ticket?
That is not a big chase scene - that is "sorry officer, we will move it, or use the valet, oh, and have you seen a guy with this pin on him....".
Now, no movie is perfect - many have issues here and there - but overall, if the story, or scenes or character arcs - or something - anything - is good enough - we can forgive little nuances. The sequels are an endless stream of flotsam and jetsam of an almost unprecedented poor quality - I mean, this makes ed wood look skilled.
As someone who has actually taken screen and stage writing classes, and been involved in writing and producing several successful productions (pak has 20 years stage, theater and comedy experience - in addition to being a gamer) - the sequels are a prime example of "what NOT to do" in writing.
789 were so bad in plot and story development that they make transformers franchise look like academy award-winning material.
Star wars is an incredibly rich setting with almost endless possibilities (I mean - did these guys even watch clone wars, or play any of the games - or ever hear of timothy zahn's work?) - and we got that garbage. _________________ SW Fan, Gamer, Comic, Corporate nerd.

Zing!
Not that I disagree with this sentiment, but seriously, ouch. _________________ Sutehp's RPG Goodies

Just repurchased the X-Wing and Tie Fighter flight sim games. I forgot how much I missed them. |

Someone on Twitter posted a handful of defenses for TLJ this week, so I thought I would share it. Rian Johnson himself retweeted it so it made the news rounds.

I don't agree with everything he says, and I think he misses the point on some of the criticisms. But I wanted to share it for balance. _________________ *

I actually like it the best of the sequels. That's not saying much, but still. |

Honestly, TLJ had some very promising moments. In particular, I think Luke's "fight without fighting" scene against Kylo Ren would've had real potential if it had been part of a larger theme tracing back through the OT and PT. IIRC, in the novelization for RotS, it's stated that the Clone Wars were a massive trap for the Jedi, and that the Jedi walked into it by choosing to fight in the war. Some sort of epiphany about breaking the paradigm of good and evil battling with lightsabers would've been very cool, but Disney either couldn't or wouldn't give us that. _________________ "No set of rules can cover every situation. That is a good point. IN the prequel, we DID see the jedi fail, becauase they just 'rushed in'. Had they explained that's WHY luke fought the way he was doing, was BECAUSE he was told that fact, after Yoda made that realization, that may have had more of an impact on that scene.. _________________ Confucious sayeth, don't wash cat while drunk! |
