Not just the Rebels. The Empire liked to do the same thing. "Hey, let's defend an entire convoy with one (1) TIE Fighter! What's that? Shields?!? Hey, Murray! The new guy wants shields! Ha! Get out there and hope for the best like the rest of us." _________________ Aha! |

To be fair to the Rebels, they were in such dire straits in the beginning of the war that they would take anything that would fly. It's not like they had a choice or a chance of procuring armed top-of-the-line freighters. They took whatever they could get. Remember the Gallofree GR90 transports? _________________ Sutehp's RPG Goodies
Only some of it is for D6 Star Wars.
Just repurchased the X-Wing and Tie Fighter flight sim games. I forgot how much I missed them. |

Yeah, I know, and I know the real-world answer is "Because Larry Holland & Co. didn't want to design a ton of other freighters and design behavior for them in-game."
But still, between those various defense missions against waves of assault gunboats and Mission 4 in the first campaign (defend the medical frigate...which just kinda sits there getting shot up by TIE bombers), I can see why you'd take issue with escort duty.
I still think it could be made to work in a PnP game. But the GM would really need to build in contingencies in case the person being escorted is captured, killed, or otherwise incapacitated. |

Maybe they couldn't purchase armed freighters? _________________ Confucious sayeth, don't wash cat while drunk! |

I just figured it out: It's a test of loyalty and dedication. Both sides only want pilots willing to repeat missions against overwhelming odds until they don't get it wrong. _________________ Aha! |

Look, an escort mission subject who would take a full dodge and go to cover would be a nine billion times improvement over the average video game escort subject.
Heck, LOTRO it's usually... "I am terribly afraid for my life, but am going to wander aimlessly through this dangerous wasteland looking for my shoes or whatever." _________________ "I've Seen Your Daily Routine. You Are Not Busy!"

Yeah, I almost never really deal with escort missions in games I play anymore. Or at least, if I do, they're almost never that irritating.
I think you could make it work in WEG Star Wars, though. You wouldn't be stuck with the pre-programmed idiocy of a video game drone to casually stroll into a free-fire zone. Instead, it'd either be another PC being escorted, or an NPC played (fairly) by the GM. |

Often i have the pc's who are NOT involved on the player's ship, run the crew of the ship they are escorting... _________________ Confucious sayeth, don't wash cat while drunk! |
