Also, with regards to the Dark Matter suggestion, I think I may have mashed up Dark Matter with Hypermatter, but I wouldn't mind combining the two concepts, as dark matter gets hardly any mention in the EU. _________________ "No set of rules can cover every situation. My kneejerk reaction when watching an episode of deadliest catch was to have the Star Wars equivalent be worm "fishermen". It would be dangerous (of course) and hard to find the worms. _________________ Blasted rules. Why can't they just be perfect? |

I carry a can of WD-40 on my truck, and I just found out the other day that WD-40 is made of fish oil, not a petroleum byproduct. If mynocks and space slugs are silicon-based lifeforms, there are all kinds of possibilities for harvesting and usage of complex silicates derived from their organs and tissues... |
Good ideas, as silicon has a great many uses, too.

Giving this a bump, as there are a few new ideas for this concept in D6 Space. There are at least three different space-going, non-sentient alien races (another is a possibility), at least one of which includes hunting in its description:Chalsamars (pg. 7)- Giant gem-creatures that fire translocation beams that can even transport targets into alternate dimensions (that would probably need to be altered to better fit with the SWU).
Charybdis Devourer (pg. 8) - Appears an asteroid, but is actually a living being capable of manipulating gravity, up to and including tractor beam effects (pulls in ships that crash into it, and are subsequently digested) and space-warping interstellar travel.
Starwhals (pg. 15) - Basically massive whales in space (adults measure 150-250 meters) that make ram attacks against enemies (including Charybdis Devourers), and are composed of highly advanced, naturally occuring chemicals and components that make the Starwhal a target of poachers. There's also the Orvoxx (pg. 13), but it's less of a huntable resource than it is a nightmarish energy vampire.
Anyway, of the three listed, the Starwhal is the obvious choice here, but the other two also have some potential. _________________ "No set of rules can cover every situation. I just read through this thread and have a suggestion. For a dangerous high-paying job in the Star Wars universe, how about Nova Mining or Supernova Mining?
Rare and exotic elements are created within stars naturally. As the star ends its life cycle, these elements are blown off the star catastrophically and are in the expanding hot shell of a nebula expanding outward. Scoop miners would travel into these nebula to capture clouds of valuable compounds while braving radiation waves, ion storms, magnetic storms, flying debris, and claim jumpers. Space Slugs and Mynocks could use the outer cooler layers as feeding or breeding grounds, presenting additional dangers.
Purrgil could use the location as a "power up" before travelling to other areas (and thus be hunted in a way similar to the whaling industry - which leads to more adventuring possibilities in itself).
The Empire could have its own research base at one spot while the Mining Guild extracts elemental compound wealth (and tolls) at another.
Come to think of it, you could have all of the above happening at once because nova shells are big and supernova shells are even bigger.
Oh, and don't forget the white dwarf or neutron star in the center causing havoc! |

Completely unrelated, but I want Steve Irwin to talk about Krayt Dragons.

Someone made the point on the first page that gases in space are too diffuse to be worth the effort and expense of mining them.

This, I think, is more likely, and more in keeping with the topic in question.

Maybe, rather than mining the expanding shockwave, scavenge miners could be coming in to search for precious metals in the like in the shattered pieces of asteroids in planets in the wake of the shockwave. _________________ "No set of rules can cover every situation. So, YouTube has been throwing out Whale Wars clips on my feed, and it got me thinking about this topic. The descriptions for the Space Slug mentions how Space Slugs are a source of valuable minerals and chemical compounds, to the point where they are legally protected from harvesting in certain systems.
The Steve Irwin reference above, combined with the more militant approach taken by the Sea Shepherds crew from Whale Wars opens up the possibility of anti-poaching operations, only exponentially more violent, what with the prevalence of armed vessels in the SWU.
"Slugging" fleets could be fleshed out, with small, fast slug-hunting ships harpooning and killing space slugs, then hauling them out to larger processing ships hovering nearby, and escort ships.
There's also room for mynock baiting, putting out specialized buoys (basically, crab pots in space) that lure and trap mynocks, which can also potentially be harvested for unique, complex chemical compounds. _________________ "No set of rules can cover every situation. Rathar hunt seems to be interesting:

Has anyone read the comic book Space Dumplins?
http://www.spacedumplins.com/
It is a wonderfully drawn, working class space adventure. There are some beer drinking space fisherman (former swoop biker gang?) that have a bachelor pad fishing shack space ship.
I think you guys would love the "fishing lure" torpedo launcher in the comic. Picture a reverse tractor beam. The "lure" attaches to a space whale or ship and forms an "energy line" and pulls the ship along like the boat in Jaws. And each lure torpedo has a super cute design. |
