Social TNs vary wildly. Difficulties scale all the way up to Heroic but tend to Moderate or Difficult depending on PC prep. My players fail often. I just try to make sure they fail forward—or at least sideways—rather than shutting the narrative down completely.
If they fail an attempt at bluffing the person they're taking to could call security, suspiciously gather more evidence before calling them out, pull an April Ludgate and clearly not care, lie in return, reveal that they too are interested in scamming the bank... the possibilities are endless. My goal when choosing is to maintain a fast-paced cinematic feel that allows an adventure to wrap up in a satisfying way in 2-3 hours even if the party completely fails at their initial objectives. If they don't get any credits, what can they walk away with? What victory can they snatch from defeat? |
