I personally would have done the opposite; keep the interactive department and build a freemium app much like dnd beyond, lay off the RPG department and freelance new content for the RPGs. Especially if the RPG department came up with the idea of proprietary dice and the core ruleset divided in 3 books.

My understanding is that the special dice is just an FFG thing they do with all their games. Of course, it is to sell dice, for all games that have them.

And I wish the RPG had just been a Core divided into three. It wasn't divided. It was triplicated and each one was made slightly different from each other. Most all game mechanics text is identical between the three core books. They just made core books for three character/campaign types: independents, rebels, and Force users. Huge money grab. I bought all four beginner sets (so I have 4 sets of dice), all three cores, and most supplements for the independents and rebels. I'm a sucker for Star Wars RPG books, especially for ones with good art. I despise the rules, but I still forked over the cash anyway.

What's wrong with me? I have a problem!

I have lots of FFG Star Wars books on my shelves gathering dust.

Being a Star Wars game addict is a benign affliction; I'm blessed (cursed?) with this affliction as well Shocked

Benign? I guess it is relative. I had a dream last night that I fell off the wagon, and I was so disappointed that I broke my streak of not drinking alcohol. I was very happy to wake up and realize that was just a dream.

My dreams range in quality from frustrating hassles (example, dreaming I just drive around on backroads, lost, all night) to horrifying nightmares that are just way too mundanely scary. Like the time I dreamt I was shipwrecked and forced to eat the corpses of other passengers that had washed ashore.

I've been doing a bunch of stuff to gain control over my dreams and last night finally had a breakthrough. I was stabbed right between the forearm bones, blood was spraying everywhere, and my attacker was still menacing me. I said "this is my dream, I'm in charge" and the knife flew out of my arm, the blood stopped spraying, and my attacker fell over dead.

You are describing my exact relationship with FFG's Star Wars miniatures games.

I've played in a campaign for a few years of FFG's Edge of the Empire, and I've also played in a few convention games.

It's okay, but I too am not as fond of it, and there are a number of issues I have with it.

The books are gorgeous, though!

My group has played 2 different campaigns with FFG's SW. It took me SEVERAL sessions to really get the narrative dice and become barely proficient in them.

It is an OK system, and I can see why people would like it. I just HATE talent trees and am not fond of narrative dice.

There is really nothing that FFG's game does that WEG 1E can't do in a simpler way, in my opinion.

http://www.d20radio.com/main/fantasy-flight-games-long-term-plan-will-discontinue-rpg-development/

I didn't post this in its own thread because there hasn't been an official statement from FFG yet, but d20 Radio claims to have independently confirmed that FFG's long term plan is to phase out all RPG production. It is not known if that means a Star Wars RPG can be separately licensed, and if not then there may not be an active Star Wars RPG on the market at all someday.

I can mention a few companies that would be better suited to the licence off the top of my head, and hopefully one of them will snatch it up. Hopefully it'll be Cubicle 7, and they'll pull the same trick they managed with the Warhammer Fantasy rules, and basically just go back to the most beloved rules (take a wild guess) and revive those while combining in some newer stuff.

Just about the best thing FFG brought to the table is some of the fluff in the sourcebooks that can be used independently of system. The 'Revan Mythologies' and 'Qel-Droma Epics' in Nexus of Power is a good example.

Given the change to customer service policies, it would seem they laid off that department too.

https://edge-studio.net/

Maybe someone who is more up on it can speak in more detail to it, but my understanding is that the FFG Star Wars RPG is being transferred to another company that is reprinting the out-of-print FFG books and making new ones for the same game system. I also learned that the game system for FFG Star Wars is called Genesys. I'm thinking it was created for Star Wars and now they are trying to make other games with the same general game system, but I admit I'm not sure.

It seems like FFG created the base system earlier than Star Wars, originally for the Warhammer Fantasy 3rd Edition, which uses the same dice and cards system, though places a larger emphasis on the cards than Star Wars does.

As Warhammer 3rd edition was less of a success, it does seem that the success of Star Wars is what spurred them on to create the Genesys spin-off though. There are differences between all three, though, and some consider Genesys to be the best of the three, with a few people working on a Star Wars conversion of the Genesys system directly.

Yeah I am also active on the Star Wars: Legion board and it seems that FFG is outsourcing their RPG's, not cancelling them.

The change to customer service is pretty bad. They won't replace missing parts anymore. You are supposed to exchange it at the store and the store is supposed to get a new one from the distributor and the distributor is supposed to go to FFG for credit. What a mess. Even f'ing MONOPOLY will make good on a missing part.

OK, so if I understand correctly, FFG created a game system for Warhammer Fantasy 3e, then adapted that system for FFG Star Wars, and then made a genre generic system adapted from the FFG Star Wars system. Thank for this information. I have no experience with Warhammer. I own a lot of the FFG Star Wars. I've ran it and played it once each. I had no idea that it wasn't a completely original game system. (The only other FFG game I know is a d20 OGL space fantasy game, Dragon Star).

But what is still confusing is that I've ran into several people offsite stating that the FFG Star Wars game system is Genesys. If FFG Star Wars is being adapted to Genesys, that would mean it is not really Genesys already. I don't like the FFG Star Wars system as it is - I have absolutely no interest in getting Genesys and doing a personal compare/contrast analysis of them.

So I just skimmed a reddit thread about the systems and several FFG forum threads, and I found that there are a lot of differences and "Genesys" per se is indeed a new system intentionally developed from FFG Star Wars to both generalize it genre-wise and make some improvements. Many of the FFG SW GMs are adapting Genesys elements into their Star Wars games. This gives me enough to start politely correcting people who label the existing FFG SW game system as published as the Genesys system. Wink

Thank you.

The biggest differences are that careers now no longer have specialisations, with the talents arranged into five tiers, being available to any character and being bought through a 'talent pyramid', where you need a certain number of lower-tier talents to start taking higher-tier talents.

Characters also define their motivations in four parts, defining a Desire, Fear, Strength, and Flaw, which is more complex than the more basic motiations of the FFG system. These can cause situational bonuses or penalties to various social rolls when trying to interact with characters. Usually strengths and flaws result in adding a one-die setback or boost, depending on how it's used, while desires and fears result in a two-dice setback or boost.

That part might be worth stealing.
