Even "toons" can die.

Toon was in use back in EQ, so before Warcraft and not initially derogatory. With the crossover in players between MMOs and P&P the use of the term is inevitable.

I had a gm who would start us out as Imperial and quickly have us leave Imp service. I never liked that.

I always wanted to do an Imp campaign where there was honor in the service. Sort of a Rommel vs Patton feel, where the Imp players are honorable warriors fighting to maintain order in a chaotic galaxy. A starfighter campaign seemed particularly suited for this, or a capship campaign. Serving under Grand Admiral Thrawn would be a good idea.

Thoughts?

FWIW I played EQ since about the time Kunark released and I never heard or rather saw it used even once. Ever. Now it may have been used later because I quit around the time of Lost Dungeons to play Final Fantasy XI so I don't know if people started using it after that point. I just know that in my tenure with UO, EQ, FFXI, and DAoC, I never once witnessed the term being used, and I played a LOT back in those days and was usually involved heavily with the communities in some way or another.

The first time I saw its use was on the WoW beta forums and I remember a very specific thread where they were making fun of the art design and calling characters "toons" and meaning it to be derogatory. A lot of people said they were not going to buy it or play it due to the cartoony graphics.

On a note related to the topic - to the OP: if you think an Imperial or Sith campaign would be fun and your players can handle it, then by all means try it out. It's the only way you'll know if it's viable for your group.

Going back to the original topic...lol

I was in a game set in the days after Order 66, and our party was made up of dark side Force users working directly for the Emperor, hunting for Jedi trying to stay alive. We didn't get to finish the game, but it was quite fun getting to run on that side of things for a while.

Did this once, as a gag- started my characters off as Stormtroopers, then had them get massacred by their own characters, before resuming the adventure as their regular selves. Smile

That makes me wonder. Has anyone played a game SET during the Ep1-3 time frame where their PCs were part of the separatists? What of the "Grand republic"?

Now, how in the world could I have died back during the Clone Wars when I was clearly alive post-ANH? Just a case of mistaken identity, doc. That was my great-uncle, Jaxxoff, the ill-fated hyperspace explorer.

It would be interesting, I'll bet...especially getting hold of some of that Techno Union gear...

I don't think I would do Republic, or Separatists before RotS. As much as I love the prequels (which is about as much as I love the classic films), I've oddly never had any interest in running (or playing) in a campaign set during the prequels. I'm not totally sure why. Maybe its just that I've been playing this game since the 80s and Star Wars roleplaying is just hardwired into my brain as the time surrounding the classic trilogy. Now I am fascinated by the inter-trilogy period, and I have some really cool ideas for the post-RotJ period, so it seems that my basic requirement is the Galactic Empire. I'm sure I have never ran a campaign that didn't involve the Empire is some way, even if it was just as a setting and not the primary antagonists. (Individual adventures outside of the Empire within those campaigns? Sure, occasionally.) So my limits seems to be immediately post-RotS through the final destruction of the last vestiges of the Palpatinian Empire.

I do have some ideas for an adventure or maybe a mini-campaign that takes place a few hundred years before the films, but it takes place outside of the Republic in my original setting, the Whills Nebula. It would be prequel adventures that fill in some backstory for the setting.

But regardless of where or when my games take place, I still have absolutely no interest whatsoever in ever running evil characters, period. I make that extremely clear up front for all new players. The 'character alignments' allowed in my game are scoundrels, heroes, or something in between. 8)

So where would you put the separatists into the equation. Evil, misunderstood??

I know your question was posed for Whill, but I would personally think that they would be evil. No doubt. They openly follow a Sith Lord after all.

I also have a question for Whill - what would happen if all of your players demanded that they wanted to play in a "evil campaign"? I'm just curious only because I could see my current group (I have few new players at my table now) doing this at some point. One originally wanted to play an Inquisitor that secretly infiltrated the group, and when I turned him down he wanted to play a Bounty Hunter that was secretly working for Vader or Mara Jade. I found a way to temporarily get him out of the group (citing too many people at the table for my liking, which is true), but he may be back at some point in the future. He has a lot of influence with a few others at my table, so I'm a bit worried that he may try and talk them into wanting an evil campaign.

I'm like you in that I believe that certain games exist to play in a certain style and Star Wars to me is about being heroic (or a scoundrel with a deep seated want to be good), not evil and I plan to hold to my stance even if it loses me those players. Just wondering what you would do if it happened to you.

Well, there were heroes on both sides, from what I hear. Wink

I do think a lot of them were supposed to be what Dooku claimed to be; people who genuinely believed the Republic was corrupt (it kinda was- they followed a Sith Lord, after all! Wink ) and oppressive. Certainly, not the guys belonging to the corporations that made the armies, but a lot fot he average people... I think TCW did things with that. So there'd definitely be room for having a large faction of separatists who are genuine, honest idealists trying to fight off an unfair set of restrictive laws. (Kind of like the American Revolution; few people would characterize England as 'evil,' but they had their colony/member-states in a position that was unacceptable to them). There just probably wouldn't be room for any of these 'good intention' sepratists to be from the Techno Union, the Trade Federation, the Intergalactic Banking Clan, etc.

I think there'd be plenty of idealists from these groups. In fact, I think the Separatists are the more heroic group. The Jedi struck first with their assault on Geonosis, starting the clone wars. The Separatists only wanted to leave the Republic, initially.

The Separatists were merely exercising their rights.

If Amidala were still queen she may have seceded from the Republic too. They certainly did not come to Naboo's aid during the trade blockade ten years prior. Note, Naboo probably wouldn't have joined the Confederacy, what with the Trade Federation, but I could easily see them leaving the Republic.

Technically don't the republic also follow the same sith lord? And after order 66, they are definitely following him!

Let them know that you as DM are not comfortable running one of those games. So if they are all hell bent on it, have one of them step up and DM.
