I think Lucas still listens to fan desires. Or keeps them in his mind when doing things.
But those fans aren't the those who were up with A New Hope, Empire and Jedi.
They are the now a days 8-16 year olds that watch the Clone Wars, buy the toys, buy the video games, and all that fun stuff. I think he does pay attention to them.
I actually found an interesting article that compared the then Lucas director and the now Lucas producer. Suggesting when Lucas had to compromise, fight, and get agreement for his ideas(against the studio and other people) during the original trilogy it turned out great. But in the prequels since he didn't have to agree with anyone and just did what he wants, it turned out not so great. What he decided was it, and that was the end. There was no compromise. |
I was referring to the films, not the Clone Wars and the EU. The films and the EU exists for different purposes. You may not agree, but Lucas sees himself as an artist. His films are his art. Yes, AotC and RotS made him a lot of money, but art sometimes sells well too. He is very single-minded when it come to his art/films.
During the filming of the original Star Wars, he ran out of money and had to go back to the studio and ask for more money. They told him to cut the final battle out of the film and just end the story with the rescue of Princess Leia from the Death Star. Lucas refused to give in, they did end up giving him the money and we got the Battle of Yavin.
There is no fan influence on the story of the films, classic or prequel. If fan opinion mattered, then Greedo would never have fired, Anakin's Force Ghost would still look like he was in his 70s, Jar Jar would not exist, and the EU backstory for Boba Fett would not have been contradicted.
Lucas is also a business man. The EU was created for the purpose of making money. It is a business. The films may be art+business, but the EU is only business. Do the fans (customers) have some any influence over it? Yes, as any good business model would have it. Lucas has stated over and over again there will be no movies that take place after RotJ, and yet Lucas vetoed the idea of killing Luke Skywalker off in the New Jedi Order series. Why? Not for the sake of continuity with g-canon. They couldn't kill Luke because Lucas thought it would be bad for the franchise to kill off Luke. Luke sells. Lucas has stated that in His Star Wars Universe, the Sith were destroyed forever in RotJ, and yet Sith exist still exist in the EU. Why? Because Sith sell. _________________ *

Hey no offence taken Whill. As I outlined I'm functioning on what is most likely a highly romanticised childhood memory, not only am I talk about over thirty years ago, but also primary school ages or the memory of those from middle age. It is firstly fallible and secondly romanticism.
I was an avid follower of star wars in media, again I'm talking grade 2 to grade 5 in primary school. We RPG'd in the schoolyard and collected the available EU which was the trading cards. The backs of the trading cards had backgrounds, Vader, Boba Fett, Yoda, etc. From these we extrapolated as kids do, it told about Vaders title. It told about the Mandalorian Knights of the Clone Wars. This would've been 1981.
I remember Lucas being asked about his portrayal of nazi symbolism in media and his response, but of can only paraphrase from that long ago. There maybe a lot of crap on the web about star wars, can't imagine why it's not exactly politics or anything, but I really wouldn't know because I'm just talking about my own background and memory of it. |

Came across this fascinating discussion from a few years ago. As often is the case, I think Whill did an outstanding job of articulating things, and I think he nails everything spot-on.
Just a couple of things I'd like to add (that further support Whill's posts):
1) I too was an avid collector and die-hard fan since the first movie came out in 1977. I remember the first Annual put out for the Marvel comic book. It had a long tale about three characters: one was Darth Vader (but back when he was a Jedi, so as a middle-aged human) , another was Obi-Wan Kenobi, and the third was Anakin Skywalker (a brown-haired human in his 30's or 40's). This obviously was allowed through back in the days (probably 1978) when Lucasfilm didn't reign in much of what went out with regard to the EU of the day. That's why I have an ESB trading card set (circa 1980) that gives Luke's age as 22, and Leia's as 20, or why "Splinter of the Mind's Eye" has a bunch of stuff that contradicts later things we know from the movies. Anyone who's read the fascinating accounts in the "Annotated Screenplays" knows that things were constantly in a state of flux and change, while each of the movies were made.
2) Though I've seen that some don't believe it, it's commonly said that the word "Vader" means "father" in Dutch. It certainly does if you use Google to translate. _________________ Currently Running: Villains & Vigilantes (a 32-year-old campaign with multiple groups) and D6 Star Wars; mostly on hiatus are Adventures in Middle-earth and Delta Green |

I like to use COMPNOR as the villian in my game. Stormtroopers and the regular military are great enemies, but I love the psychological element of COMPNOR. These are the guys that indocrinate your children, turn families against one another and pretty much have eyes and ears on everyone. Everyone, including the military.
A favored tactic of mine is to have an ISB agent backed up by undercover veteran compforce troopers. I find this works great in urban settings with a human population. If the crew cuts and far-off stares become too obvious or if humans are scarce I have Enforcement recruit some local "help". Nothing like some alien mercenaries to throw off the Imperial scent.
"That gran keeps looking at me with his third eye."
"He probably likes you. Maybe he'll buy you a drink?"
"I have a bad feeling about this..."
My players respect the threat that stormtroopers bring to the table. They hit hard, die harder and have endless numbers on their side. But the truth is my players fear the ISB. _________________ "This job is 90% talking to people and 10% shooting at them." |
