The reason I included a two-level terrain difficulty reduction is because at High and All-Out Speeds, terrain difficulty modifiers in the RAW are automatically increased by 1-2 levels. In every demonstration and video I have ever seen, Freerunning practitioners are seen to clear these obstacles while running, and even when they do take minor spills, they usually recover with a quick roll and keep right on going. A two-level terrain difficulty reduction reflects both the acrobatic nature in which they clear obstacles and the ease with which they can recover from minor spills. _________________ "No set of rules can cover every situation. At a fast jog at the very least. One of the best displays of Parkour was the chase scene in the beginning of Casino Royale. The man Daniel Craig was chasing was Sébastien Foucan, who is recognized as one of the co-founders of Parkour, and the inventor of Freerunning.
The distinction between the two is one of style; Parkour is geared toward efficiently moving around various obstacles, while Freerunning adds an element of showmanship, incorporating flips and turns that are technically unnecessary to traversing the "course". In the end, I incorporated it into one skill because whether or not the character uses efficiency or showmanship is immaterial, because successful use of either results in difficult terrain being successfully crossed.
Although this is not a Force power, there is a physical skill called the Art of Movement that the Jedi were taught that bears a lot of similarities to Freerunning. It's even possible that this is what Yoda was teaching Luke on Dagobah when he was making Luke carry him around in the backpack. The Wookiepedia description of the Art of Movement states that, while this is a purely physical skill, it could be augmented by the power of the Force (i.e. Enhance Attribute). _________________ "No set of rules can cover every situation. I had a player once who wanted to move in a parkor-esque style (she'd just finished the first rebooted Prince of Persia game), I just had her make a combination of climb/jump and acrobatic checks depending on what she was trying to do. It worked out pretty well for our purposes, but I don't see any reason why it couldn't just be an advanced skill. |

Quote: | It doesn't say that in the rules; it just says that if the character meets the prerequisites and pays the CP cost, he can learn a new skill. |
Since i don't have my main rule book, i can't check.. BUT each advanced skill does specify the corresponding pre req skill be at 5d.. And none of the listed examples in the books (engineering, medicine etc) are less than 5d. _________________ Confucious sayeth, don't wash cat while drunk! |

In the rulebook, the only Advanced skill listed is Medicine, which requires a minimum First Aid of 5D. Since I was basing this off two different skills instead of just one, I decided to cut the character a little break. _________________ "No set of rules can cover every situation. In the Stronholds book we see some other advanced skills, and IIRC 2 of those have multiple pre-reqs _________________ Confucious sayeth, don't wash cat while drunk! |

Even so, nowhere in the rules does it say that your prerequisites have to be at 5D. That just happens to be the number that WEG used most often. _________________ "No set of rules can cover every situation. Free-Running (A)
Time Taken One round or more
Specializations: None
Advanced Skill - Requires 4D in Running and Climbing/Jumping
Characters with this skill can move fluidly over broken terrain, climbing sheer walls and leaping gaps seemingly too wide for a normal person to cross, all performed with near-superhuman grace and speed.
In game terms, this skill can be used in place of Running and Climbing/Jumping. All Climbing /Jumping rolls are reduced by one Difficulty Level, and any Terrain Difficulty modifiers are reduced by two levels. In addition, this skill can reduce falling damage (Difficulty is equal to 2x the distance fallen, and damage is reduced by 1D for every 5 points by which the fall succeeded). |
I'm really not seeing why you don't just use climbing/jumping (primarily) and running, or (A) Acrobat if you are insisting on an advanced skill. I don't think the skills themselves are different, just how you use them. _________________ Or that excessively long "Noooooooooo" was the Whining Side of the Force leaving him. - Dustflier

I agree. Just roll running or climbing/jumping. Why add more skills? Don't know about you, but my players don't have that many CPs burning holes through their character sheets. |
