|
|
I confess that most of the gaming groups I've played with over the years have had one digree or another of a swearing problem. Depending on the stage in my life has depended on how much I've contributed to that swearing problem.
In our current group, swearing isnt much of a problem. But that brings us to our groups recent discussion.
As a group, we have decided that while we dont usually cuss during our gaming sessions, we wanted the option of letting our characters swear during our games without our language resulting in my two young boys learning words that they shouldnt know.
We have decided to start cussing "Star Wars" style. And have started a list of cuss words for our games
Current list:
Sithspawn
Sithspit
Dumbhutt
Does anyone else have some in-universe colorful language that they use in games? |

Here's a website that might help. Googling "Star Wars Swear Words" gets a lot of hits. _________________ "No set of rules can cover every situation. It's expected that you will make up new rules to suit the needs of your game." - The Star Wars Roleplaying Game, 2R&E, pg. 69, WEG, 1996.

Made a thread about it on my forum - http://s6.zetaboards.com/Hotaru_no_Hishou/topic/1225248/1/
Personally, I rather dislike curses that involve the Sith, "the Emperor's black bones" and the like. To me, it seems that they wouldn't be in common usage in the galaxy, and particularly in the Rebellion era, at least classically, stories of the Sith and Jedi weren't particularly common, and were treated as fairy tales (I recognize that this attitude has changed in the recent decade or so, but, classically...). I just think that such curses would be about as popular in the wide galaxy as references to Russian communists or Nazis are as curses in real life today... sure, it happens, but, very rarely.
I'm more in favour of more general use swearing like Kark!, Chuff-sucking, Fark!, Frell!, and the like. _________________ Hotaru no Hishou; a messageboard about games, friends and nothing at all.

Don't forget damn and hell from the movies. In general I'm not a prude about bad language, but I had to institute a "PG" sort of rule for our gaming sessions because Earthly profanity (mainly f- and sh- words) were getting a little out of hand. So I said, if you don't hear the English profanity in a Star Wars movie, then you can't say it here. And it is just easier to make the standard across-the-board during a game session (for in- and out-of-character). I don't punish anyone who slips, but that is rare. I encourage players to make-up their own in-universe profanity and expression, and substituting these for real profanity actually helps everyone stay in character.
And I'd just like to throw out an observation that "Blast!" as an exclamation doesn't seem like it would actually be a very bad word, because energy weapons are called "blasters". Unless "blaster" (n. energy weapon) and "blast" (v. to shoot an energy weapon) are supposed to be slang words. Probably not since "BlasTech" Industries is a company name. _________________ *

I have a pretty comprehensive list of slang and swear words. Can't remember how long it is but at least 15 pages or so. Was going to make it a resource to the community as soon as I polished it, since you are a fellow rancorpit books member I can shoot u a rough copy if u want it. |

There was actually a discussion on this some time ago.
Perhaps that thread can be mined for useful swear words.
[edit]The last page of that thread has the list[\edit] _________________ Don't waste money on expensive binoculars.

Ben: Leave that to me.
Han: D@mn fool. I knew that you were going to say that!
Ben: Who's the more foolish... the fool or the fool who follows him?
If used appropriately, d@mn (ANH) and hell (TESB) are ok for my game sessions. Afterall, they were ok for Star Wars movies in '77 and '80. _________________ *

Frell is my new fave scifi profane hors d'oeuvre. Just rolls off the tongue.
Ever since I had first heard Felgercarb in the late 70s, I always thought it sounded too awkward. Too many syllables, perhaps. |

Captain M'Kard, one of my NPCs is a pirate captain with a habit of stringing together some rather elaborate swearing, along the lines of "what in the sticky end of Hades are you playing at, Smoggs?!"
As you can see, it is really pretty mild as far as real-world language goes, but profanity remains implied. _________________ Or that excessively long "Noooooooooo" was the Whining Side of the Force leaving him. - Dustflier

I put together a glossary of soldierly slang for a stormtrooper campaign that may never see the light of day. Maybe you'll find a few useful. Culling the PG-rated items from it, I get:
* Bantha Fodder, Wampa Meat--doomed, as in "You're bantha fodder, pal."
* Bulkhead Polisher, Polisher, Knob Polisher--a poor soldier, suitable only for bulkhead duty.
* Bulkhead Polishing, Bulkhead Duty, Polishing, Knob Polishing, Spitshine--any shipboard duty whose primary purpose is to keep soldiers busy.
* Compie--any COMPNOR agent, but especially a COMPFORCE Soldier. Using this term in earshot of a COMPNOR agent is a poor career move.
* Concs, Pack of Conks, Yeast Feast--concentrated rations; "conky" is a corruption used to describe any noxious substance, such as bantha droppings.
* Flying Coffin, Coffin--older or obsolete troop carrier, such as the Dreadnought class, relatively vulnerable to defensive fire.
* Frag--to kill or destroy, especially with explosives.
* Grease--to succeed with little effort, especially to win a battle by seizing the command apparatus or other objective sufficient to cause immediate surrender.
* McBiggie (and others)--commanding officer, from the armored Mobile Command Base popular among officers who prefer to command from the front lines. The word substituted for "B" can vary creatively, depending on how troops feel about a specific commander.
* Meesa Two-leg--highly insulting term for non-human intelligent species. The implication is of a subhuman rube stupid enough to think that two legs makes him the equal of a human.
* Oiling one's gun--routine maintenance of any military gear, not just a blaster. Also a popular pastime in private; c.f., knob-polishing.
* Pisser--from "proto-industrial species," any intelligent, non-human species subject to imperial rule but employing less sophisticated technology, especially a species without spacefaring technology.
* Poodoo--excrement. |
