Anyone want to take a stab at how Rebel/New Republic pilots survive ejecting? In the books, they eject on occasion, but I've yet to see anyone explain how the pilots survive. That is to say, they are conspicuously lacking in the "sealed helmet" department. Anyone have a feasible answer? _________________ Arek | Kage |

Perhaps the cockpit (or part thereof) ejects with the pilot making a capsule that protects the pilot from the void of space.
Or perhaps only Givins eject _________________ Don't waste money on expensive binoculars.

Or they eject and hope someone will rescue them before they die _________________ "I take orders from just one person: Me!"

Yeah, that is a question that has come up a lot in my gaming years. What we eventually settled on was that the open-face rebel helmet must have some sort of system thingy that automatically seals the rest of the pilot's face when he ejects. Something like a containment bubble or whatever. Since we never came to a solid answer, we decided just to accept that there is some thingy that seals the helmet completely and move on.
I seem to remember in the old X-Wing PC game, there was a cutscene when you ejected, showing your pilot being rescued by a rebel ship or captured by an imperial shuttle. I think the floating rebel had a full-face helmet that is slighly different from what we see in the movies. _________________ "He's Gry Sarth, of course he has the stats for them." |

Yeah, that was about the best I could think up on my own. I've been just figuring that there was a miniature magcon field projector in the helmet or chest unit. Magcon (magnetic containment) fields are used in hangar bays located in space to keep the atmosphere in without physically sealing the bay. I just wondered if anyone had anything better. Thanks for the replies guys. _________________ Arek | Kage |

I thought this was covered in a book. I do recall them mentioning that a field is erected as it detects a change in pressure, keeping your atmosphere in... _________________ The Vong have Arrived

I always assumed they'd pull on a face mask similar to what they wore inside the space worm (I forget what they're called atm) before ejecting. Space, 0 pressure and the behaviour of flesh and masks just seem to operate differently in the SW universe _________________ Hotaru no Hishou; a messageboard about games, friends and nothing at all.

Can you remember which book, Vong? There are several I haven't read from the NJO series and later, but I do have them on hand. And somehow I think that putting on a breath mask would be kind of difficult to do in the space of time most likely needed if you're considering ejecting. Yeah, the space slug's insides constituting some sort of vacuum-defying internal atmosphere was one of my next questions (I've got a few). _________________ Arek | Kage |

I cant remember for the life of me but i remember a description along the lines of:
"He pulled the ejector lever and was pushed into his seat. The wooshing of air is replaced by a small humming of his [safety field] coming on keeping the pressure the same inside his suit."
Or something... might have been in NJO.. _________________ The Vong have Arrived

If anyone can think of it, let me know. Glad to know that we were (in all likelihood) on the right track. _________________ Arek | Kage |

To me, that's an example of official material that doesn't jive with other examples of the level of technology in the setting. _________________ Hotaru no Hishou; a messageboard about games, friends and nothing at all.

Agreed (at least on that scale). Which is why I was looking for an alternative answer. _________________ Arek | Kage |

It was in one of the X-Wing Novels. Corran had the Transparisteel Pannels shot out of his cockpit, which, of course, vented the atmosphere.
The Magcon field activated, which kept pressure and air inside, but didn't do much for insulation (He got cold. FAST!).
I, personally, figure that the Chair would eject with the Pilot, with a Life Support System built into it (A big battery to keep the MagCon field going, in other words), and a repulsorlift engine for when ejection happens near a gravity well. |

Yeah, they have that sort of shielding, for example, on the hangar bays allowing ships to pass through, but not air... but to have it built into the helmet is a bit of a different idea.

See, that's in the cockpit, not the helmet. That works a little better. _________________ Hotaru no Hishou; a messageboard about games, friends and nothing at all.

Whatever it is has to be on the suit, chest box, helmet, etc. Wedge hopped out of his X-wing in Truce at Bakura and jammed his hand inside the messenger drone to keep it from blowing up, and he didn't take his ejection seat with him. Unless the magcon field is in the ejection seat, with a sealable mask available as well. _________________ Arek | Kage |
