I'VE GOT IT!!!!!!
Ok you've made the mistake of saying yes to this RPG troublemaker you have in your group... That was your mistake... BUt leave it to me to make the player be the one to agree to a change....
Base your campaign on a rogue squadran style story!!! with tons of space combat and speeder chases... all this will take place while he waits for something his rancor can do. Tada!!! I give it 2-3 game sessions before he figures it out... |

Might work...but that might get the GM nothing but an earful of whining because the stubborn player won't give up the rancor.
Even after the GM offers the player some cheese... |

Ya, and how do Wookiee's communicate with the group?
Or Rodians that don't bother to learn Basic?
Had both in my group.
Dathomirin Rancors do have a language, it's a simple one, yes, and image based. Like, I don't know, writing?
OK then, do what Fluffy did, get your friendly, neighbourhood Verpine, the dashboard of a '57 Hoverchevy, and make a really robust Speak 'n' Spell. |

I think the OP hasn't exactly made any mistakes yet... he's just looking for advice on a situation he may intentionally allow (based on some serious creativity on behalf of the player). He's just looking for advice on how to deal with a mechanical issue, not a player issue.
He's already stated that if he doesn't like the background, the character's not happening. _________________ Hotaru no Hishou; a messageboard about games, friends and nothing at all.

lol.
Yeah, there aren't too many options for Rancor characters in terms of character development; they're entirely mechanical character types, all dice no real ability to be "people" (any more than say a horse has an ability to be people). _________________ Hotaru no Hishou; a messageboard about games, friends and nothing at all.

In all seriousness, I've always been a big fan of breaking from the norm. If a player I had was serious about trying to play a rancor type character and was intent on playing the character in a way that is a break from the normal bloodthirsty mindless monster type (think of Shrek and his attitude towards how humans view him) I'd prolly be all for it.
If all he wanted to do was be a physical powerhouse who ripped everyone apart (the ultimate hack -n- slash character) then I'd be opposed to it. _________________ "Could someone please Jury-Rig my Wookiee?!"

I have always wanted to play a genetically altered Gamorian (like Piggy from wraith squadron). I would be able to be smart and such, in a body of a brute _________________ The Vong have Arrived

Yeah, I'm all for out of the norm as well... but I'm also a bit of a realist; my suspension of disbelief only goes so far (I blame it on being a trained biologist).
A rancor's mind is only capable of so much... and a Dathomirian Rancor is already an exceptional push past that level... but still, they're below (as Vong mentioned) a Gamorrean in the physical/biological capability of their minds. While I love breaking the mold, I tend to try not to go too far outside of what a species' physiology or neurology should be capable of. in the case of a Dathomirian Rancor, I could accept it having the mental abilities of a normal Gamorrean... which still isn't much beyond a mechanical character build. _________________ Hotaru no Hishou; a messageboard about games, friends and nothing at all.

you seem to have missed the obvious two other things rancors do...
Poop and sleep... the might be plenty of oppurtunity for RP as the other players argue about who has clean up after the beast...
And the constant discusion as to " If we put the cargo in there then where will the rancor sleep?", "Oh well we'll just spread the cargo around the ship in the hallways and rec room. And hey? is anyone actually sleeping in this bunk room? No? ok load it up boys!"
And lets see what happens the first day they need to transport live cargo, such as farm animals across space... LOL |

I think you missed that Vong meant for roleplay AS the rancor character... not for the players AROUND the rancor character _________________ Hotaru no Hishou; a messageboard about games, friends and nothing at all.

No no... this leaves some room for really interesting player interaction for everyone:
PC#1: Fluffy! Did you make all this mess?
Fluffy: *looks awkward*
PC#2: How are we going to unload the cargo covered in Rancor poo?
PC#1: Bad Fluffy! BAD! How many times have we told you -- not in the cargo hold!
Fluffy: Rmph. Raawrgle. Blarg.
PC#2: Fluffy has a point. How about we get a hold of a fertilizer dealer... maybe we can cut our losses. |
