Another great idea Pel!
Weather the PCs try to get to the planet's surface by a controlled crash landing, or by sneaking undetected, would depend on their mission. Do they need to be able to get in the compound and hang around for a while? A controlled crash might mean a few days of repairs, and as long as the people on the planet aren't that suspicious, you might pull it off with just snooping around while repairs are underway. However, if the people on the planet will shoot you on sight for being there, then sneaking is the only way.
