You got that right. It's no wonder Anakin, in EPI 2, was saying, "Obi Wan's gonna kill me" when he got his lightsaber chopped in half.

Plus, with the Jedi becoming so familiar with the weapon, there's a whole host of uses for it- even more if you have a fully-adjustable blade. So yeah, don't lose the friggin' thing!

No, he's talking about lowering the base difficulty number when you use a lightsaber that you personally constructed. You would then have a natural connection to that particular weapon, and would therefore be more natural using it than anyone else.

And Endwyn's right. A Jedi who loses his lightsaber suffers a penalty on ALL Force use (I think it's -1D to all Force skills) until he constructs a new lightsaber. Part of the depression at having lost such an integral part of his identity and station, not to mention the connection through the Force that he had with the weapon.

Yup... Let me find the rule for you..

6.) Lightsaber Creation: Often considered the mark of a “true” Jedi is the creation of their own lightsaber. This task is long and involved and not considered easy, but there are definite benefits to its completion. Before anyone can attempt this process they must have the Lightsaber Technology advanced skill. This skill is considered a closely guarded secret of the Jedi Order, they do not pass this training on to just anyone. Sometimes they can receive this training during an adventure by proving their worth to a member of the Jedi Order. Any Force-user character that has 3D in Control, Sense and Alter as well as having the Lightsaber Combat Force power can learn Lightsaber Technology (A) during Seminars or an Interactive as though it was any other advanced skill (see III-#5).
Preparation: Anytime after the character has learned Lightsaber Technology (A) they can begin the process of creating their lightsaber. The character must first spend time and effort to gather the requisite pieces of the lightsaber: a power cell, a handgrip, an activation plate, a safety, a belt ring (optional), a blade-length adjuster, an emitter matrix, a recharge socket, a lens assembly, a focusing crystal, and a power conduit. The character must spend 1 dedicated Seminar (no other skill training or special missions may be accomplished) or sit out one module, which the character may never gain any character points for, to gather these components. If done at a Seminar, the judge will run the character through a special mission to accomplish this. The most difficult item to find is obviously the crystals for focusing the blade. Even if characters have the crystals through a module or other means, they still must use a Seminar or module to gather and prepare the other pieces. The character must also spend 2500 credits at this time to procure the other pieces required. The crystals cannot be readily purchased. They are found through the means presented by the judge at the Seminar special mission or as a month long excursion if done through sitting out a module.
Construction: In a following Seminar, Interactive or by sitting out another module the character can assemble these pieces into their lightsaber. The base difficulty for this roll is Very Difficult (25), but there are a few available options, which the player can choose to lower this difficulty. One option is to spend more time to insure that the construction goes smoothly. To do this the character can dedicate an additional Seminar special mission time or sit out an additional module, both of which will lower the difficulty one level (reduce difficulty by 5). Players can only lower the difficulty by a maximum of three levels to Easy (10) by using this method. Another option is that the character may use an old lightsaber as a guide in the construction of their new lightsaber. This will lower the difficulty of the Lightsaber Technology (A) roll by one level (reduce difficulty by 5) on top of any other options used. If this method is chosen, the deconstructed lightsaber is destroyed and rendered useless in the process. When the final difficulty level is assessed, the character makes the Lightsaber Technology roll. The character can use a Force point or up to two character points on this roll, but they will be lost in the process.
Benefits: The lightsaber is custom fit for the Force-user. This lowers the lightsaber weapon base difficulty value to Moderate (15) from Difficult (20). Also the focusing crystals are better attuned to the Force-user’s use of the Force. This means that when the Force-user activates the Lightsaber Combat Force power they only require an Easy (10) Control roll instead of Moderate (15) and a Very Easy (5) Sense roll instead of Easy (10) to activate the power.

I realize this is an old post, and my apologies for bringing it back to life, but I was curious where that information came from.

Are you talking Luke's Academy? If so I'd have to say that depends. In the Young Jedi Knights book Lightsabers, Luke has Jacen, Jaina, Lowie, and Tenel Ka build their own lightsabers at about the age of 14. Not training sabers but the real deal. However, in the game Jedi Academy, Rosh makes a comment to Jaden about how he'll probably get a training saber when they reach the academy and how lucky Jaden is already to have the real deal. And both Rosh and Jaden look like their probably around their late teens early twenties. So there's a bit of a question as to when Luke allows folks to get a real lightsaber and when they have to use training sabers.

Since he makes a comment to the four kids about how dire the circumstances are and how they otherwise would not get a lightsaber at their age, I'd say he's not looking to arm kids that young with lightsabers. But on the other hand it's one thing to already have a lightsaber when you first reach the academy. If you don't have one and you're old enough for one, then you probably get a training saber until you can build your own.

Actually, I was looking specifically for what Garhkal posted:

"6.)Lightsaber Creation: Often .... *snip* ... to activate the power."

What book/manual/sourcebook/etc that came from. The bit about both the lightsaber creation and (A) Lightsaber Technology.
