To me it does indeed look like the two "regular" TIEs are behind the ship in question
Naturally this will make it smaller than it looks, but even with that it still looks like quite a bit larger and maybe more compact than most TIE |

If it truly is closer, and the cockpit is standard TIE-sized, then its wingspan root-to-root would be roughly equal to that of a TIE Bomber, which would allow it to fit on standard TIE launch racks. Of course, those wings might get in the way... I wonder what this thing would look like with TIE Bomber wings... _________________ "No set of rules can cover every situation. Cut-and-paste doodle in Photoshop
While reviewing the actual size of the Science TIE in Photoshop, it appears it is about the same size as the TIE Bomber's command module and much smaller than I originally thought.
I'll go back and update the stats accordingly. _________________ Currently playing D&D 5E and painting an unholy amount of miniatures. |

Very nice! Now it looks like it belongs! I feel a stat coming on. Not tonight, though... _________________ "No set of rules can cover every situation. It's expected that you will make up new rules to suit the needs of your game." - The Star Wars Roleplaying Game, 2R&E, pg. 69, WEG, 1996.

What I picture for this ship is something along the lines of carrier-based patrol aircraft like the S-2 Tracker or S-3 Viking. These multi-role aircraft could serve as bombers, anti-ship missile platforms, anti-submarine warfare (carrying specialized sub-hunting sensors and weapons).
I see this ship as an armed light tender, in the sense that it provides a variety of relatively mundane support functions to the various ships of the Imperial Navy. On a lot of my stats, I used the term Light Utility Craft as part of the Small Craft Complement, and I see this filling that role. It's not much of a fighter, but it provides useful support to capital ships in day-to-day operations, and is common enough that a group of PCs are pretty likely to run into one.

Special Equipment: MODULAR MISSION BAY
The TIE Sentry is used to perform a variety of different close support functions for both naval vessels and orbital or deep-space facilities. To better serve in a wider variety of roles, the Sentry is fitted with an equipment bay that can be fitted with a variety of different system packs, each optimized for a different role. Removing one system pack and installing another requires an Easy Starfighter Repair roll, and takes 20+2D minutes. It also requires a crane and appropriate tools.SHUTTLE/CARGO
