I've been thinking of how the scene in Return of the Jedi, where Boba Fett goes into the Sarlacc pit, happens, mechanically, in a 1E game.
I'm not a huge fan of the Wild Die. And, 1E should be able to model the movies using just the rules presented in the 1E core rulebook.
Well, I looked closely at the scene today, and it's simple. Han makes an attack, the attack hits. In 1E, the minimum that will happen is that a target will collapse in a stun.
The rest is just color--the GM describing the action in a swashbuckling, space opera way.
Han is blind. I'm sure the GM applied a penalty for that. Han's player rolled the attack on Boba Fett and hit, even with the penalty modifier.
Boba Fett was getting ready to use his wrist weapon, but his attack roll must have been lower than Han's attack. Therefore, initiative kicked in, and Han's roll was considered first.
Fett probably rolled well on his STR defense roll, but the character was still stunned and near the edge of the skimmer. Falling down means falling off (maybe the GM rolled to see if he fell within or off the skiff), and into the Sarlacc Pit.
The GM just described all the action in an exciting way--comical about how Han's attack connected, and instead of just having Boba Fett go over the side, the GM ad-libs the jet pack firing and slamming him into the side of Jabba's barge. Fett slides down into the pit, and then rolls to the open mouth. The GM burps in front of the entire group, and everyone laughs.
Mechanically, it's the same result. Fett is hit, falls in the stun, and falls into the pit.
The twig snap that Han makes when sneaking up on the Scout Trooper on Endor is often used as an example of a Wild Die Complication.
What happened, from the mechanical perspective of 1E? Han failed the roll. He wasn't sneaky. He stepped on a twig. |

There was no intiative in 1E. We just declared first action, second action, etc. Now Boba did take the time to aim so that delay is what allowed Han time to smack him with the pike.

Han didn't exactly hit Boba, he hit his jetpack, causing it to misfire and send everyone's favorite bounty hunter rocketing into the Pit of Carkoon. Now there are a few ways of looking at this, including the one you mentioned. How about these:
- Han's blind but he still needs to save his friends. Also, he has an axe to grind with Boba. Under 1E rules, he expends a Force Point and succeeds in such spectacular fashion that not only does he knock Boba down, he causes the jetpack to malfunction, sending Fett into the Pit of Carkoon.
- Boba is so intent on lasering Luke (he has a beef with Jedi after all) that he completely ignores Solo flailing blindly behind him. After all, he's wearing Mandalorian Armor! What could possibly go wrong? Han blindsides Boba and while he doesn't do any real damage, he does trigger the jetpack. Basically Boba left himself deliberately open and while he didn't suffer any direct damage, he still had a very bad day.

We didn't get the Wild Die until 2E, although we did monkey around with Uncertainty Dice after the Rules Supplement. I agree that in 1E rules, Han flubbed his Sneak. He rolled, thought he was ninjing in style, and nearly blew the entire mission. _________________ Aha! |
