Thanks, guys. So it seems torpedo spheres are likely only "precursors" in that they may have come out while the first Death Star was under construction, thus sometime during the time of the Empire. OK, cool.
Are there any other known giant space fortress/battle station type of things that did exist during the time of the prequels? _________________ *

But even that premise seems flimsy. If there are only six in service as of the in-universe writing of the Imperial Sourcebook (months after Yavin), they would seem to be contemporaries at best. Considering what a one-trick-pony the stock Torpedo Sphere is, I would find it more likely that they are an experimental model rushed into service after the destruction of the Death Star, because suddenly the Empire did not have a special big gun ship that could overpower planetary shields.

I am not aware of any. There are a few heavily armored space stations in the EU, and their descriptions do not mention any specific date of introduction. I've always liked the Derrilyn Platform from the Elrood Sector Planets Book. _________________ "No set of rules can cover every situation. That's logical.

I'll take a look at that one for ideas. Are there any new heavily offensive and powerful capital ships that came out in between TPM and AotC, or at the very beginning of the the Clone Wars? I'm looking for ship for a story idea that could I guess even vaguely fit the description of a "space fortress", if possible one that came out within the couple years leading up to AotC. Maybe I'll just invent a precursor to a torpedo sphere, because it certainly could be a unique ship (like Death Star model). _________________ *

Well, you have that one the rogues took over in Bacta war, that existed for quite a while. But other than that, most i know of are more ship yard style.. _________________ Confucious sayeth, don't wash cat while drunk! |

The Cross-Section books mention that the Trade Federation Core Ships could be matched with a variety of different hull types, depending on mission. The possibility of a hull configured as a bombard platform is not out of the question, and something the size of a Trade Federation ship (big and slow) could easily be defined as a space fortress. _________________ "No set of rules can cover every situation. That one doesn't really count; the Rogues only modified the station with the gravity well projector and the targeting systems for torpedoes and missile launchers. They essentially were running a con on the Lusankya, bluffing its captain into thinking the station could take them on, even though it actually couldn't. _________________ "No set of rules can cover every situation. That's helpful. And of course the Trade Federation ship in TPM (which, being the source of the droid invaders, I call the "mothership") was the pre(quel)cursor to the Death Star (serving a similar function to the Death Stars in the plot). A unique experimental Trade Federation Lucrehulk-class "space fortress" variation would be very appropriate for the years leading into the Clone Wars. Thanks! _________________ *

The 'Expeditionary Battlemoon' from Rogue Planet, I recall. Certainly, some immobile fortresses like Hosk Station and Centerpoint. Heavily armored craft like TCW's Malevolent (though that would come a few years later). And I feel like I am forgetting something significant...
Anyhow, don't know if any of those quite fit the bill, as they are one-offs. _________________ Star Wars: Marvels, the audio drama: www.nolinecinemas.com

I remember Centerpoint Station from The Corellian Trilogy, but it dates back to 100,000 BBY and is so powerful it could tractor planets around so it is dramatically way too epic for the time period (It just can't be more powerful than a Death Star). But I supposed I could go the 'recently discovered and made operational ancient weapon' route if I wanted to, just scaled way down from Centerpoint Station.
Rogue Planet was so horrible that I had forgotten about the "Expeditionary Battle Planetoid" plans. But that is EU canon that I'd enjoy overwriting so hmm. I'd never heard of Hosk Station or Malevolence before.
Thanks for the ideas! _________________ *

Malevolence was the Super Ion Ship from the first season of The Clone Wars TV show. _________________ RR

To be fair, I think Hosk station was just a massive station- but if it was one of a series, and another was weaponized... I could see such a craft being plausible. _________________ Star Wars: Marvels, the audio drama: www.nolinecinemas.com

IIRC in darksaber (or was it the Xwing/Wraith squadron novels) wasn't there mention of a "Pulsar station".. some sort of death star=torp sphere hybrid? _________________ Confucious sayeth, don't wash cat while drunk! |

That was Isard's Revenge, but it didn't actually exist beyond just a concept. It would've been 30-40 kilometers in diameter, with smaller superlasers (ala the axial ones on the Eclipse and Sovereign-Class SSDs) covering all 4 arcs, gravity well projectors and heavy secondary weaponry.
If it had ever been built... _________________ "No set of rules can cover every situation. It's expected that you will make up new rules to suit the needs of your game." - The Star Wars Roleplaying Game, 2R&E, pg. 69, WEG, 1996.
