Back in my days as a player, we had to fight off a psychotic AI in control of our ship. Her name was Sim, and she convinced us to rescue her from the last ship she killed, under false pretenses. She was part of our crew for a short time, then betrayed us. We hated her, and Fallon Kell (my PC) left her running on a no-wireless datapad, in a sealed box, with a bomb and a proximity sensor, floating randomly and deep in the interstellar void, as a long term of solitary confinement and eventually capital punishment for her crimes against us. If I recall correctly, she killed an NPC we rescued from the Game Chambers of Questal. _________________ Or that excessively long "Noooooooooo" was the Whining Side of the Force leaving him. - Dustflier

Obviously you can go in that direction. AI being evil or corrupted. It would add a vulnerability to the ship. But i see a lot of perks. |

Indeed. When discussing Firefly, Joss Whedon made the point that he wanted the ship to be almost a tenth member of the crew, after a fashion. This would take that to another level; just imagine the eccentric personalities a sentient ship could develop... _________________ "No set of rules can cover every situation. I've done this on a couple different occasions in my game. The first was when the tech expert of the group, having gotten board with the dijark table in the ship, decided to reprogram it to be more aggressive in its game play and to pull more power from the ship, the pc allowed it to link into the ship systems in an effort learn from every move, countermove and life in general. He gave it a cold and calculating droid personality which moved from playing on the table to trying to kill the players P.D.Q. They managed to force it to upload its personality matrix into the oven, which they then ripped out of the ship and sold for scrap.
nearly 7 years later I had the oven go out on the then current ship (Same game universe, different group of PCs) and the players went out and found a used, but in decent condition replacement (used and for a bargain!) the A.I. initially presented itself as the oven droid and was very helpful before taking out the group R2 and nearly killing an npc by causing an overload. Matters took a turn for the worse when the players tried to delete it and it seized control of the guns and opened fire on nearby ships. Once they realized it could transfer its conscience they rigged up a way to put it into the dijark table (the player who came up with the idea had been there for the original adventure...) and tore the table out and leaving it in the nearest trash heap on the closest planet to them.
That game ended with someone saying "I can't believe someone would throw away this perfectly good Dijark table..."
I think that there was a third instance, but after nearly 20 (off and on) years of Star Wars the memory tends to get a little lax. I asked one of the players who has been there for them and who is younger than me...LOL.
Little bit of an update, there was a 3rd instance with the 'evil A.I.' as a downloadable virus that ended badly for the ship it got Downloaded to.
Now in terms of just straight beneficial A.I. on the ship, we had one of those too. This NPC was created by me and my cousin for a game a friend ran. Much in the vein of 'Orin, legend of Star Chaser' my cousin (Dude, not his name...) wanted an A.I. on his ship...this is what we came up with. Although I suppose we could have argued that the Maneuverability and Hull of the ship could have been dex and strength respectively.

An AI blatantly stolen for the Galaxy of Fear books, incidentally. And yes, you recall correctly- Tympanic fell prey to knives in a gravity-shifting environment. Nasty. _________________ Star Wars: Marvels, the audio drama: www.nolinecinemas.com
