I was inspired by the drawings in the Artwork section, and noticed that a lot of people play humans (and white male humans at that).

Since I love diversity in RL and like to see it in my games, I am wondering what species, genders, and what-not make up your groups.

How biologically diverse are they?

My current group consists of five PCs. Two of them are white female humans who are ex-girlfriends of each other. One is a male Tiss'Shar. One is a Blood Carver male. The last one plays a droid.

I'd like to think my group is pretty diverse.

What do your groups look like?

Oooh, the Tiss'Shar look cool! 8)

Our group is:

Human (white male) mechanic/pilot
Muun slicer
Human (white female) Jedi Padawan
Clawdite scout (but mostly he looks like a white male human)
Human (white male) Jedi Knight
Miraluka information broker
Barabel muscle/weapons dealer

You can see what they look like here.

Ooohhh nice. I like the images you pulled up. Are your human characters mostly the same demographics as their players?

My Tiss'Shar character really hams up the brutal velociraptor mentality. He refers to any sentient mammals as "milk-sacks," and eats raw meat at restaurants by pinning it to the floor with his feet talons and ripping it apart. He also doesn't understand human body language. Once a shopkeeper winked at him and the player brutally assaulted him.

I have found that many roleplayers want to play characters that look like they do. This leads to lots of white males. It's hard to find diversity in the gaming community, which is unfortunate. I do have a male player who mostly plays female characters.

I wish geeky things like our games would be more accessible to women and people of color... but that's a different topic.

.... or is it?

I have mostly stuck with humans and some of the wolven style races. When i do human, its rare for me to do any female or non Caucasian characters..

For the most part the demographics are the same as the players. The player of the Padawan female is a white male, and the player of the Miraluka is a black male.

Don't know what the current group will look like as we're still in planning stage, but the last group had an Ugor, Kel Dor, and 2 humans.

Well my three game groups are made up of humans. I think they are all in the US, with one from Ukraine and one from the UK. One is a woman btw. That's about it.

In my last game I had three players and two npcs.
a white male playing a wroonian male
an asian male playing a miraluka white female
a white male playing a male farghul
a male klatoonian and white female human as npcs.

besides the human npc, who may leave the group at some point, I have an all non-human cast.

As for myself, it really depends on whatever inspires me at the time. Somtimes I look at a template pic and really like the image. Another time the background of a species inspires me. I GM most of the time so I don't get to play often or ever. My last character was a relative of Garm Bel Iblis, so naturally he was a white corellian human. As a male myself and the sole player of the game my character was male.

I agree! My pet alligator lizard inspired me to use one as an assassin not too long ago with great results. Like a raptor stalking its prey, he was occasionally heard and rarely seen until he struck. If I ever get the chance I might play one myself one day.

I don't know why, but I've always been fascinated by reptilian characters. I played one in a supers game for a long time, played a Sarkan in SW D6, and one of my main NPC baddies chasing after our PCs is a Trandoshan. I will add in a Tiss'Shar villain at some point, I'm sure. Very Happy

One white human male.
One silver-grey masculine droid.

What? How do you suspend disbelief without real space aliens gathered around your table!?

My first game on here (run by Jamfke), was a very diverse group. When it was last active, we had a modified servant droid (male), a male Tarro, a male Utai, a male Besalisk, a modified Rim Securities K7 ‘Black Dagger’ Security Droid (a fallen Jedi Knight’s brain was successfully integrated into the droid’s chassis), a young male Gen’Dai, a male Farghul, a male Shard, and four human males. Now, of the characters that went into inactive status, we also had a Verpine, a Wookiee, a Mashi Horansi, a Togorian, another human, and a non-specific felinoid.

And that's just in one game. A lot of players I know (myself included) will often tailor their character race to meet the kind of character they want to play. Wookiees, Trandoshans, Esoomians, or even Gen'Dai for muscle, Anomids for slicers or other tech-savvy characters, etc. Most of these players have seen the appeal to running non-humans from time to time, so the games I find myself in are quite often diverse.

It does mirror what we saw in the movies, somewhat, being as the 'main characters' were mostly humans. But then as roleplayers, we aren't bound by budgets or limited by special effects, nor do players of aliens have to undergo hours of makeup.

Hmm. It seems like the vast majority of players are male. That is something to think about.

Well, in 33+ years of role playing I have played with maybe 5+ women. Its like video games, its a male oriented hobby and to be honest, friends don't let other friends cross-gender role play. Its just creepy.
