If they ask, then sure. I tell them. Yes that has given some players pause as they realize with their dice level, they WILL more the likely need to spend CP to beat the #, but they would have done so even if i had not told them. In a few rare cases it has also made players not even attempt it though when they realized their skill level was insufficient for that task. _________________ Confucious sayeth, don't wash cat while drunk! |

I've seen that, too, though if you're using the Wild Die that's foolish. I've seen players just decide not to roll, then when persuaded to try, they roll numerous 6's and end up succeeding just fine! _________________ Currently Running: Villains & Vigilantes (a 32-year-old campaign with multiple groups) and D6 Star Wars; mostly on hiatus are Adventures in Middle-earth and Delta Green |

I do not tell my players what the target number is. If they ask I will give them a nebulous answer to the skill difficulty. I do this to keep the metamechanics at a minimum, keep the players in character and because they do have a chance to spend Character Points, giving them the additional information of a target number sort of negates their use. _________________ Don Diestler

For those who don't tell them the #. Are you tempted to fudge the diff # down to what they roll if it 'is close' (like say 2-3 away)? Do you give out hints of how far they missed it by to see if spending CP would be worth it? _________________ Confucious sayeth, don't wash cat while drunk! |

Depending on the narrative, how important not important the skill roll is, if the story is best served by moving on, if the idea was good, was a character point spent, is everyone roleplaying well, etc. I take all these things into consideration when a roll is close. I also will use partial successes sometimes as well. _________________ Don Diestler

I don't tell... and yes, I am definitely tempted to do this often, or soften a follow-up roll because of it. Dodge, and Strength vs. damage, are the main areas I don't; when it's accomplishing a task, it's much easier to.
I too go with my gut on the numbers. I tend to stick to multiples of 5 (the literal numbers given in the rules). _________________ Star Wars: Marvels, the audio drama: www.nolinecinemas.com
