If you want the players to have a chance of surviving 8D should be enough.
To me at least, Star Wars is about being heroic and bigger than life, not instant death situations.
I once played a RPG where there was a door way to "Oblivion". Assuming it was a magical portal of some sort my character stepped through. The DM told me my character was instantly obliterated. No saves, no chance of survival, no recourse, that character was done. It infuriated me soo much that I've never forgotten the situation and it has shaped the way I've game mastered ever since.
Also, Thermal detonators are 10D damage and inflicting anything higher than that on a character seems excessive to me.
Anakin survived a swim in lava, so I'd like to think that it's actually doable for a PC spending 5CP around to survive, at least a round, so other players have a chance of pulling them out. |

Technicality: Anakin didn't go swimming in lava; he caught fire just by being near it. _________________ "No set of rules can cover every situation. It's expected that you will make up new rules to suit the needs of your game." - The Star Wars Roleplaying Game, 2R&E, pg. 69, WEG, 1996.

To me that 'doorway to oblivion' type situation should be allowed to exist. Such as in ADND stepping into a disintegration chamber or sphere of annihilation. Or for SW, stepping out of the airlock of a ship flying through hyperspace etc. _________________ Confucious sayeth, don't wash cat while drunk! |

Both a sphere of sphere of annihilation and the disintegrate spell both allow saves.
Tournament play kills off character to thin the pack, and D&D 1st edition was full of PC Murder. A lot of it's modules were originally written for tournament play. It's not something you see in the Stars universe of movies, comics, novels, etc... and I don't feel it belongs in the Star Wars RPG.
I respect your opposing opinion on the subject, but I just can't see how it benefits the players. |

Though I am okay with PC death, I believe it should be reserved for extremely dangerous and most especially foolish/stupid choices on the players' parts.
As a general rule I view this much more like Centinull. I like the possibility of death (or other major, horrible consequences) to keep the thrill of risk in the game. But it should be exceedingly rare and difficult, especially for certain genres (and my main two campaigns are space opera and 4-color supers). _________________ Currently Running: Villains & Vigilantes (a 32-year-old campaign with multiple groups) and D6 Star Wars; mostly on hiatus are Adventures in Middle-earth and Delta Green |
