We use a home brew system for giving out character points in the middle of an adventure. We do this because our games tend to run 4-6 hours and the GM doesn't always remember all the cool things that happened that were cp worthy at the time. We use poker chips, white, red & blue, and each one corresponds to something different.

1) the GM decides to toss you a white poker chip because he thinks you did something cool. This is a GM call and 1 chip is worth 1 point.

2) you think you've done something worthy of a cp and you take a red chip. You can make your case during the next break.

3) You think someone else has done something worth a cp so you take a blue chip. You can make your case at the next break.

What do you guys think?

Seems reasonable. I had a Gm who did something similar with Pathfinder.

I've been considering doing something like that also. Basically 1CP for every hour or two as a standard award, modified up or down by how well the group did that session.

When you 'make your case' for the red and blue chips how is it decided on? Just the DM making the call after you have said your piece? Everyone?

Is there any limit on how many times a session it can be done?

The limit is at the GM's discretion. The most I've ever seen was when I got seven chips in a six hour session. I was really in character at the time and tend to play my toons to the hilt.

Just because you think you should get a cp (red poker chip) doesn't mean the GM agrees, nor does someone grabbing a blue chip for you guarantee a point.

More often than not when someone starts to reach for a blue chip the three of us who use this method tend to agree and just give them a white chip at the time instead.

In our games red chips don't get taken very often.
