Actually, that sounds more like George Lucas than the Jedi.

Personally, I've always pictured Lucas adding the stupid midis so as to shut up a circular question only to run screaming when the question continued. Originally it always seemed in the OT that there was supposed to be a mysticism about the Force, we were to get a little idea how some could manipulate it but never understand fully how or even why some were Force-sensitive and others weren't That was for me always a great part about the Force, the mystery. But the think with the midis seemed like Lucas was constantly getting this question so he tried to shut it up. Goes a little like.

Quote:
Fan: Why are some people able to use the Force and others can't?

Lucas: Well it's a mystery. Some people are just born able to use the Force. No one really understands why that is so they simply accept it as the will of the Force.

Fan: Oh I get it, it's a mystery. But why can some people use the Force but other's can't

Lucas: You just said you got the fact that it's a mystery.

Fan: Ok, it's a mystery. The will of the Force. Just why can some people Use the Force and other's can't?

Lucas: (sighs) Like I already said and you claimed to understand, it's a mystery. One not even the Jedi themselves can answer beyond saying it's the will of the Force itself. It's like why some people here on Earth claim to have psychic abilities such as being able to communicate with the dead or seeing the future, or even being able to bend spoons with the power of their minds. Many of those who make such claims tend to be proven to be frauds, but occasionally you do come across who can't be proved to be lying and science can't explain just how they do it. Is it that they have tapped into all of their brain as some claim or is it something else. Who can say, and that is what folks who can use the Force face. No one understands why it's only a few folks and not everyone, science can't explain it. So it's just an unsolved mystery.

Fan: (nodding in understanding) So it's something that can't be proven scientifically?

Lucas: (relieved) Exactly.

Fan: But why can some use the Force and others can't?

Lucas: (exasperated) Ok, you wanna know. There's these.... these... these things called.... (grumbles to himself as he tries to come up with something) Force-cells? No that sounds stupid. Bendu? No I was originally going to call the Jedi that. Amrahd? No, they should eventually figure out that's dharma backwards. Midi-chlorians? Yeah, why not. (speaks clearly again) There's these thing's called midi-chlorians, see. And these midi-chlorians live inside every living thing in the galaxy. Now some people have a high midi-chlorian count which let's them use the Force.

Fan: I get it now. Everyone has these midi-chlorians living inside them. Midi-chlorians are a way to connect with the Force and having a high midi-chlorian count means you can use the Force. It makes perfect sense now.

Lucas: (let's out a relieved sigh) Finallly.

Fan: But why do some folks have a high midi-chlorian count so they can use the Force and others don't?

Lucas runs screaming hysterically into the night as he realizes they circle hasn't been broken

I think the midis were a way to give a scientific explination to shut up a circular question that just continued

LMAO!

Somehow, looking back on it, that was exactly how my subconscious pictured it.

Brings up an interesting question, though. Do you think its possible that Lucas deliberately FUBAR'ed the prequels as revenge for having to answer all these stupid questions over and over again?

Maybe, but I tend to see the only problem with them being the midi-chlorians. The FUBAR revenge was more the RotJ DVD and adding Christensen as Anakin at the end for me.

ha ha. Mids have actually existed since the 70's, before the original Star Wars was released. Lucas just never put them into a movie until 1999.

In the bonus material of the 2007 deluxe hardback edition of The Making of Star Wars (chock full of scans of Lucas' original handwritten notes for Star Wars development), there are interviews that Lucas gave From July 28 - August 11, 1977 describing the backstory of certain aspects of Star Wars.

On the Force, GL said:
Quote:
It is said that certain beings are born with a higher awareness of the Force... Their brains are different; they have more midi-chlorians in their cells.

I was a bit surprised to read that, because I had also assumed that "midi-chlorians" were a new invention of his for the sake of TPM.

What I personally remember from an interview with Lucas from 1999 was that "midi-chlorians" were a way to quantify a being's potential to use the Force, as a plot point for Anakin perhaps being the Chosen One (that would destroy the Sith). A statement like "The Force is strong with this one" is too subjective-sounding. The Jedi Masters could argue that is just one some Jedi's feeling or point-of-view.

Having there be a biological basis that takes the form of hard evidence that is not disputable (a higher midi-chlorian count than even Master Yoda) lends to a more credible consideration that the boy may have been "concieved by the midi-chlorians", which combined with Shmi's assertion that "there was no father" intentionally aludes to a sci-fi version of a miraculous virgin birth, something that many religions and mythologies through-out the ages attribute to some gods and otherwise divine saviors.

Midi-chlorians are just a very minor plot point regarding a bigger concept of Anakin possibly being the Chosen One. Mids are completely inconsequential to the grand mystical nature of the Force. They don't change a thing about the Force.

I believe they are the direct result of a 'delusion of grandure'.
