That seems like a good way too. I have not yet seen this chart. (which JT Swift referred to) _________________ Or that excessively long "Noooooooooo" was the Whining Side of the Force leaving him. - Dustflier

I let the weaponry of capital ships have the same hull code as the rest of the ship, but one scale lower. I then add or subtract a die or two depending on the damage code of the weapon, which I see as an indicator of the weapons size... _________________ If you fall seven times, get up eight times. |

You're just being a hard@ss, Garhk
Now there has to be a difference between studying something (IE the pilots look over a Nebulon B before the assault), receiving information about it ("shoot at the spar"), and figuring that sort of thing out in the heat of the moment (a Nebulon B shows up).
I agree that players cannot and must not use their own knowledge extensively, but if they come up with the idea to try to gain an advantage I personally wouldn't make them roll a rare or advanced skill.
Of course this wouldn't do for every scenario. Perhaps you the GM want the Nebulon B to scare the PCs or to complete some task before the PCs can damage it.
It has to boil down to the game, the GM, and the players. _________________ Blasted rules. Why can't they just be perfect? |

I have a rep to maintain
But i do agree, a lot of teh reasoning i use for making them roll not that often used skills, is so i can help out whittle down the metagame knowledge. _________________ Confucious sayeth, don't wash cat while drunk! |

And that kind of think can be hard to balance.

Very true... I had one player mentioning he read X in novel Y, which would have given them the edge in combat against baddie Z... When i tried to tell him since his character is a junk yard dawg (scrap guy), his knowledge of the sw-verse is not like ours (the players).. but if he really wants to read up on something to learn about it while combat is going on..
GO for it.
You just have no actions inc dodge, since your nose is in a book.
Oh, you don't have that book. Too bad. _________________ Confucious sayeth, don't wash cat while drunk! |

Could be worse. 2nd gencon i attended (still only playing for the sparks group at this time), one of the gms i played under did that to 2 players who just could not stop arguing about something. WHILE A fire fight was on going.
Eventually he told them that either they shut up, OR that arguing is what their pc's were doing. NO DODGE ALLOWED! _________________ Confucious sayeth, don't wash cat while drunk! |

Arguing in the middle of a firefight? Star Wars characters would never do that! _________________ Or that excessively long "Noooooooooo" was the Whining Side of the Force leaving him. - Dustflier

This is kind of off topic, but since this thread touched the subject of people arguing and checking out rules and facts during combat, I must advice anyone who haven't seen this movie on youtube to see it: "Gamers" Search for it and enjoy all the geekiness that we are guilty of... _________________ If you fall seven times, get up eight times. |

In real world sea going battleships the gun turrets usually have the thickest and most protective armour protection on the entire ship.
Vulnerable systems are the most armoured on capital warships, it's a simple rule. Yes, they use the maximum hull armour in my gaming.
But here's what I do, I use the die cap scale system for general shots and the die add/subtract scaling system for called shots. That way combined actions or high damage weapons used against specific systems are perfectly capable of severely damaging them individually, but regardless of the damage sustained by a specific system or location the rest of a capital ship like a Star Destroyer remains undamaged.
This way the only method of obliterating something like a Star Destroyer is superior capital scale firepower, but you can leave one a useless hulk with overwhelming starfighter assaults in extended combat. |
